CH24 Birthday Edition by Carl Hansen & Søn

I have been working from home since the last 4 years, so the last few weeks have been nothing new for me. I find that when I change places in my apartment to work from, it gives me new energy and motivation to finish the tasks at hand. I have my large office desk with a big computer where I do most of my work, but also created small corners in my home where I can sit and get some work done on my laptop, draw, or write lists with pen and paper.

This week, a very special chair arrived for my home office: The CH24 Hans J. Wegner Birthday edition 2020 from Carl Hansen & Søn. The brand is the world’s largest manufacturer of furniture designed by Hans J. Wegner and has a tradition of celebrating the late designer’s birthday, which is today exactly 106 years ago (he was born April 2, 1914), with a limited-edition release of his iconic Wishbone Chair.

This year, designer and creative director Ilse Crawford reimagined the chair in a glossy navy blue finish. Wegner had a long standing with Asian design history and craft. Blue has been such an important color in Chinese culture (think blue and white China or dark blue of indigo textiles) and the high gloss finish references the traditional Chinese lacquer finish.

As you might have noticed on my Instagram lately, I have been adding blue elements in all areas of my home and love the fresh touch they give in my otherwise neutral interior palette. The CH24 Birthday edition fits in perfectly and I absolutely love the combination of the high gloss blue finish with the soft and natural texture of the woven paper cord seat. It’s a beautifully crafted piece of classic Danish design that has become such an icon.

The first Wishbone chair was conceived in 1949 and was the first of five chairs that Wegner designed for Carl Hansen & Søn. The chair is still made in Denmark in the Carl Hansen & Son’s factory on the island of Funen, where the individual parts are manually assembled and its’ papercord seat is hand-woven. Each limited-edition chair features a small brass plate engraved with Hans J. Wegner’s signature and date of birth, discretely placed inside the chair’s frame. Every chair is also accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.

This blogpost was created in collaboration with Carl Hansen & Søn, however all opinions are my own of course. If you would like to know more about the brand and the new Birthday Edition of the CH24 chair, have a look on their website.
