One of the basic interior design rules is that if you want to make a space look bigger, you should work with a light color palette. While true, I also think that a studio home can benefit from lots of character and personality, which can be more easily achieved with a paint color that is a few shades darker.
You can always balance out the wall color by selecting some lighter pieces of furniture and making the Scandinavian interior work in a balanced and harmonious way. And if you are in doubt, you can always go for a feature wall instead of painting the entire room. Keeping a white ceiling like in this place will make your ceilings look taller.
a living room with white floors and dark gray walls
White wood flooring can have a very clean look when combined with all-white walls (see a perfect example here), but it can easily look clinical as well. When working with painted wood floors, you can balance out the look easily by working with a darker wall color like the dark grey that was used for the living room of this small apartment.
The combination of the floor and walls is both moody and fresh somehow and give character to the space. The clean lines of the white sofa with the warm-colored area rug and the brown leather chairs work very nicely against the white floors and the grey walls, while the deep colors of the art prints stand out so nicely against this wall color as well. If you were to use light grey walls in this apartment, I would personally go for a lighter color scheme in the accessories as well to accentuate the reflection of the natural light (like in this beautiful home).
The round vintage dining table works well with the moody look in the rest of the living room and the white of the candle, vase, and pendant really stand out against the dark wall and color of the wood. That’s the advantage of dark walls, everything you place in front of it has a tendency to pop out, which is an added advantage.
Opposed to the sofa, there is a small reading corner, where picture frames are arranged in a small gallery wall which ad so much extra character and visually separates the reading area from the rest of the room. The dark gray walls form the perfect backdrop for these prints in different shades.
The kitchen living space is brightened up both by the white flooring and the white kitchen cabinet fronts so typical for a Scandinavian-style interior. Yet the walls paint balances out all the white.
a bedroom with greige walls and warm accents
The bedroom has been painted in a greige paint color, with accents of muted red adding more warmth. Both the original built-in cabinet as well as the new storage solution have all been painted in the same color as the wall, which gives this room a beautiful tone-on-tone look.
The white flooring gives the impression of more floor space throughout the apartment, which is a nice effect to achieve for anyone that lives in a small apartment. When it comes to small space living, you should always start with the room designs first: selecting the color of the wall, what’s the focal point in the interior and how can the layout work.
The bedroom and living room can are separated by a small hallway, yet you can get a glimpse from the other room when the doors are open. The gray paint of the living room and the soft grey color with warm undertones of the bedroom and living room are different from each other, yet they complement each other in a nice way as well.
