I introduced you to antoniolupi and their carefully designed and crafted innovations for the bathroom on the blog here before and talked about their Cristalmood innovation in particular in this blogpost. Cristalmood is an in-house creation by antoniolupi as a result of their continuous research. It’s a resin that is manually poured into moulds and sanded manually after extraction to remove all imperfections inside and out and to add brightness to the object. This manual process makes every piece unique, with slight differences in color, size and surface texture. Two sinks of the same design will never be identical.
Antoniolupi has teamed up with designer Marco Piva who created ASTRO and AURA in the Cristalmood material: two freestanding sinks with strong personality and a sculptural presence that define the hierarchy of the environment. Marco Piva wanted to interpret the Cristalmood material – which he describes as ‘almost magical’ – by charging it with emotions. He worked with the relationship between the pure geometry of the container and the soft internal shape of the basin.
The AURA freestanding sink, seen in the first three pictures is a rigorous and essential volume, softened out by the translucency of the Cristalmood material. The perfect geometrical shape looks like it has been ‘carved out’ by the force of the water, which drop by drop, generates the lowering of the AURA basin.
The ASTRO freestanding sink, which you can see in the last four pictures, has a rigorous and essential volume. The design has something of an ice cube that slowly melts and the plays of shadows created by the light define the body and the shape of the piece. The design can be combined with a freestanding tap or with a countertop tap design installed on the surface.
The shape and design of the ASTRO and AURA freestanding sinks would not have been possible without the Cristalmood innovation, which is resistant like stone yet transparent like crystal. Despite being an industrial product, it is durable over time, recyclable, restorable and resistant. ASTRO and AURA sinks are equipped with LED lighting which turns the sinks into an interesting play of shadow and light and enhances the material look of the piece. Depending on which of the 13 Cristalmood colors the design is customised in, the sink can look very different, suitable for different spaces and each color fills the space with a beautiful glow enhanced by the organic shape. The drain is on the floor and the transparent opaque body contains the drain and siphon, hiding them from the outside view.
No matter which color the ASTRO and AURA sinks are crafted in, I think the sinks will undoubtedly be an eye-catching design element in a the bathroom because of their color, clever use of LED lighting and unprecedented use of shape.
