15 Half-wall Tile Bathroom Ideas for an expressive effect

post

Rather than covering your entire bathroom walls with tile, you can achieve a striking effect by only tiling the bottom half. A half-tile bathroom offers a few advantages over a fully-tiled bathroom. You need fewer tiles, which makes installation easier and reduces your material cost.

When choosing half-tiled walls for your bathroom, there is room for creativity and individuality as the options for material combinations are endless. On top of a tiled section of your walls, you can use wallpaper, a beautiful paint color, or wood cladding to achieve a striking combination of materials.

If you are looking for inspiration to create your unique half-tiled bathroom, make sure to take a look at the ideas on the list below. Even if you have a small bathroom, there are some decorative and functional approaches you can take that will create just the right ambiance to make your bathroom design unique and stylish.

Light-colored tiles paired with a dark botanical wallpaper

The gold fixtures in this gorgeous half-tiled bathroom are complemented by the beautiful warm beige wall tile that is applied to the flooring and the bottom half of the bathroom wall. To contrast this warm, metallic color scheme, a dark botanical bathroom wallpaper design is applied to the upper section.

Let your imagination run wild for the upper part of the wall, and you can install some ornate wallpaper or just any contrasting color that matches your style.

Redecorating a half-tiled bathroom with a wallpapered or painted upper section is super easy, as you can keep the tiles and update only the upper area to provide your bathroom design with a whole new look.

A half-tiled bathroom with subway tile and a greige paint color

By painting the upper half of your bathroom wall in a slightly darker color, you’ll make the light-colored tiles on the lower half the focal point of the room. The white subway tiles in the bathroom below have a glazed edge on top that makes the separation between the wall tiles and the wall paint more apparent.

The white wall tiles with grey grout form the perfect backsplash for the classic green vanity and you can easily imagine this bathroom idea with another wallcolor. There is no right or wrong answer when pairing upper and lower halves together, just make sure your color palette in general works in the space.

Skirting boards make the transition between the beautiful floor tiles and the wall tiling more organic.

Light-colored lower tiles paired with dark grey wood panels

This beautiful half-tiled bathroom pairs crisp white tiling with dark grey shiplap cladding on the top for a contemporary design with a farmhouse touch. The black fixtures stand out against the white tiles and the tiled portion sticks out from the wall just slightly, creating a ledge to place bathroom items on top.

It doesn’t matter whether you install real wood panels or faux wood, although faux wood is probably better equipped to handle the moisture of the bathroom. Either choice can look great set against a light-colored lower wall of bathroom tiles.

Shower wall tiles paired with half-wall tiling in the rest of the bathroom

It’s probably a good idea to fully tile the inside of shower enclosures, just for the sake of avoiding any kind of water damage. But that still leaves you free to do half tiling in the rest of the bathroom. Just make sure that the lower half tiling scheme matches well with your shower enclosure tiling so you don’t have conflicting areas.

In the example below, vertical brown tiling with a glossy finish is used to cover the entire shower and the half-tiled bathroom walls with a decorative trim on top. The upper portion of the wall is painted in a subtle pink wall color, creating a contemporary look in combination with the black metal shower door.

Three-quarter tiled shower wall for a contrasting effect

Even though most of the half-tiled bathroom ideas you see on this list will have tile applied halfway, dividing the bathroom walls into two more or less equal sections, you can also opt for a three-quarter tiled wall just like in the below example, with the vertical direction of the tile elongating the space.

This is also an option in case you don’t want a fully tiled shower. Shower water won’t usually reach past the three-quarter point going up your wall, so that can safely be finished with some other material.

Half marble bathroom walls paired with grey paint color on the upper half

If you’re someone who just doesn’t like bright or dark colors, you may want to avoid those possibilities altogether by simply installing neutral colors on both halves of your bathroom walls. In the bathroom below, the neutral color scheme accentuates the beautiful marble tiling on both walls and flooring.

Even when working with a more expensive material like marble, covering only half the wall will still be the more budget-friendly option.

The oversized round mirror behind the bathroom sink adds a modern aesthetic and reflects the separating line of the tile and wall paint, adding a striking visual effect to the elegant bathroom renovation.

Depending on your personal preference, you can pair your tiled walls with a contrasting paint color, however, a more calm and tranquil effect can be achieved by picking out a lighter color. In the half-tiled bathroom below, the white subway tile with black grout is paired with a soft cream wall color that brightens up the color palette of the space.

A striking bathroom interior design with a bold color combination

This is the boldest of the half-tiled bathroom examples on the list, where the straight section of the walls in this attic bathroom space is fully tiled with a gorgeous vertical green tile. The bathtub has a pink limestone treatment, which makes it stand out against the bold color of the tile.

To make the color palette even more striking, the wall area underneath the sloped ceiling is painted in a bright blue color, resulting in a unique and playful design aesthetic.

White marble tiles on the lower half, cupboards on top

Many homeowners like to use at least part of the bathroom for storage, including things like towels, linens, toilet paper, tissues, and cleaning equipment. This makes great sense since this is the room where all those items will eventually be used.

In the example below, the half-tile bathroom walls feature a beautiful white marble tile, with the upper section painted white and the area above the toilet filled with closed storage cabinets that blend in with the white wall color.

A half-tiled wall behind the toilet in a neutral color scheme bathroom

Generally speaking, half-tiled bathrooms have an aesthetic reason, or they are applied while they are a bit cheaper than a fully-tiled bathroom. The wet areas in this neutral bathroom design are covered with a beige limestone tile, complemented by a beige wall color on the top half.

The area behind the toilet comes forward to allow for the flushing mechanism to be built in. This creates a ledge for towels and bathroom accessories and the height of this wall component also defines the division line between the tile and wall paint.

A classic bathroom aesthetic with a contrasting effect

The white tile on the bottom half of this bathroom wall stands out against the contrasting pattern in the black-and-white floor tiling. To make the contrast even stronger, a dark green wall color is applied to the top half of the wall.

Rather than hanging the round wall mirror fully on the painted section, it connects both halves of the wall.

Change Things up and Use Tiles on the Top Half

Usually, half-tiled bathrooms use tile on the bottom half. This beautiful and modern bathroom however has a fully tiled top half, paired with a smooth waterproof treatment on the bottom. The bathtub is treated with the same material as the lower half of the wall for a cohesive effect.

A deep Mustard Paint Color meets the Tile Halfway

This classic bathroom, with a Victorian tile floor and a classic sink, is finished with white subway tiles and black trim. The warm addition of the paint makes the bathroom way more unique than fully tiling it, and the Art Deco-style mirror perfectly completes the look.

Achieve a Powerful Contrast with Half Tiled Black Marble

This modern bathroom design features black marble tiles on the bottom, paired with an off-white wall color on the top half for a strong contrast in the space. The white sink stands out against the dark tiling and the bottom tile creates a ledge for accessories and cosmetics.

Create the Illusion of More Space with a Half-Tiled Bathroom Wall

This gorgeous half-tile bathroom has majestic high ceilings, which are made to look even higher because of the half-tile wall. It’s a trick you can use to create the illusion of space in smaller bathrooms with lower ceilings as well.

20 Grey couch living room ideas for a neutral, timeless appearance

post

A grey sofa is incredibly versatile and this neutral shade can be combined with a variety of different colors to add more depth and visual interest to your living room design. While some will say a grey sofa is boring, I think it can enhance the space, and more importantly grey can be such a timeless choice.

As a designer, I always recommend my clients to pick the bigger furniture pieces in neutral colors and experiment with color for the smaller pieces, because they are less costly to swap out once you get tired of them. In my opinion, you should always opt for a neutral couch color, like grey, beige, white, or black, and work the textiles and accessories to add interest to the color palette.

Whether you want to introduce a grey sofa to your living space or want inspiration on how to style a grey couch, the inspirational living rooms in this list are a great place to start. Below, I have collected my favorite living room ideas with grey couches ranging from light to medium grey and darker greys that almost appear black.

The impressive dark gray wall color in this living room creates a strong contrast with the white curtains, white ceilings, and white window and door frames. The gray sofa is paired with an off-white rug, a combination of light gray coffee tables, and a mixture of neutral color throw pillows to lighten up the sofa color just slightly.

The bright blue vase is a nice focal point, as it adds the only pop of color in the living room color scheme.

Darker gray sofas will be able to hide stains better than their lighter gray counterparts, so if you have kids or like to eat on your sofa, a darker shade might be the right choice for you. Gray couches tend to work well in rooms with a lot of warm wood elements, to balance out the warm tones and make them less overpowering.

19 Modern farmhouse kitchen ideas for a rustic charm

post

For many of us, the kitchen is the heart of a home. This area of our living space, where typically everyone gathers, needs to be functional yet cozy and inviting at the same time, which is why a modern farmhouse style is such a popular choice for a kitchen remodel.

A modern farmhouse kitchen pairs sleek, minimal, and modern elements with a cozy and rustic aesthetic that makes your space unique and inviting. You can take a farmhouse kitchen classic like a reclaimed wood cutting board, apron front sink, or copper pendant lights and pair them with a few modern touches to give your space a functional and minimal makeover.

In the list below, I have gathered the most inspiring farmhouse kitchen designs that feature a modern design. Whether you are looking to make a few small tweaks to your kitchen decor, or are planning an entire makeover, this list will surely get you excited.

The authentic farmhouse style in this kitchen mainly comes from the exposed wood beams underneath the A-line roof. The reclaimed wood comes back in the cutting boards and the vintage table with storage drawers that is used as the kitchen island in the space.

15 closet desk ideas that pair desk and storage space

post

While a designated room to call your office is a possibility for some, not everyone is blessed with a spare room to turn into a home office. This doesn’t mean you have to resort to your sofa, kitchen, or dining room table with your laptop, because if you have spare closet space, this means you can create an office inside a closet, also called a ‘cloffice’.

While a walk-in closet can easily be transformed into an office, a niche space in your floor plan or next to a bigger furniture piece can be a great spot for an office nook.

A closet office with a door is great for work-life balance, as you can physically close the space after you finish your workday. If you’re tight on space, you can install a sliding barn door, yet even a curtain can do the job just fine and hide your desk away when it’s not in use.

In the list below, I have gathered the most interesting closet desk ideas to get inspired to create a dedicated workspace out of a small space.

A double desk space built inside of a custom bedroom wardrobe for a seamless effect

Let’s start with my personal favorite of the closet office ideas on this list. The entire wall space in this bedroom is used for built-in cabinets providing the interior with a lot of storage space.

The middle of the custom-built wardrobe is turned into a two-person desk with open shelving on the top which is great for storing paperwork, a green plant, or even small framed photos if you are looking to make it more personal.

Two desk lamps underneath the shelves provide the work space with task lighting and two classic black chairs contrast nicely against the white cabinets.

A shelf system next to a wardrobe module makes use of vertical space available

In a niche space in between a large wardrobe module and a window, a floating desk paired with wall shelves creates a functional workspace that looks light and airy. The wall shelves can be used for deco objects, but they are also great for paperwork and other office supplies.

While it’s important to ensure proper lighting in your office nook, having natural light from a nearby window is even better.

In this example, a kitchen module is extended to a wall of closet modules, with an integrated closet office in oak wood inside. Having a dedicated space is a great alternative to working at the kitchen table and the shelves above the desk can be used to store all your office essentials.

A work top on trestle legs serves as the perfect home office spot in what used to be a closet space in the example below. A large built-in closet office that includes a bedroom window

This is one of the more elaborate closet office ideas on the list, as the solution requires building an entire space inside the room. The assymetric floor plan of this large bedroom is fitted with a wardrobe with sliding doors next to the bed and a small room by the window which includes a beautiful window sill desk with storage underneath it.

By painting the walls of this larger space yellow, a unique and personal style element is added and bulletin boards just like the one used on this desk are great for keeping personal notes.

The back wall in the middle of a custom bedroom wardrobe is used for mounting a TV that can be watched from the bed. The area below the TV holds a table top that goes from one closet to the other and provides the space with a spacious home office spot which is great when you need a large space to work from.

A wardrobe with an integrated home office spot

When you don’t have so much space available, it’s a great idea to build your wardrobe around an office table just like in the example below. This way you don’t have to sacrifice storage opportunities below the ceiling and there is enough space for a desk in between the wall and the main wardrobe module.

The whole room features beautiful wallpaper and elegant wainscoting, which matches the style of the custom wardrobe. The desk itself is made from green marble and is paired with a beautiful desk lamp and a leather chair that finishes the look off perfectly.

Closet offices separated from the rest of the space with a curtain

Half of the entryway closet is turned into an office space paired with an eye-catching light blue chair to add a playful effect. The white curtains replace a closet door on the office side of the cabinet and the extra room on top of the desk can be used for storage as well.

When you don’t have an unused closet that you can turn into an office spot, a niche area in your room can be a great spot for turning into a workspace as well. The end of the entryway in the example below is fitted with shelves and a floating desk, which provides just enough room to work from home.

It’s important to add light fixtures so you can ensure good lighting in your home office space and adding a curtain is a great way to be able to close your workplace from the outside world when you’re ready to end your workday.

A walk-in closet office with a second level for storage space

Since you can access this closet office from both the hallway and the bedroom, it doesn’t feel claustrophobic or cramped at all. This larger storage closet fits a desk, chair, and wall shelving comfortably and a lowered ceiling divides the closet into two levels.

The upper level is great for storing luggage pieces or winter clothes storage in summer and vice versa.

A luxurious custom wardrobe module with an integrated desk in oak wood

I absolutely love this gorgeous custom wardrobe and office module in this bedroom with greige walls. This is probably the most elegant of the closet office ideas on this list as the compact desk and storage module in the middle is made out of a beautiful oak wood that is lit up with LED lighting on the sides, making this element a true focal point in the bedroom.

The vertical space underneath the ceiling is used for storage and the two closet doors on either side of the desk add symmetry to the entire room.

In this entryway, where there could easily be a full wall of closets, the bottom part of the closet is left out and replaced by a tabletop, providing the space with an impromptu home office spot. Notice that there is a plug built into the wall of the closet office, which is a crucial element for a workspace.

Use a Narrow Desk and Closet in a Smaller Room

In this narrow and long kid’s room, the owners didn’t have much space for a desk or storage. To work with the available floor space, they paired a narrow wardrobe with a gap in the middle and placed a narrow, compact desk with a floating design between the two side closets.

Leave out One Closet Compartment and Turn it into a Desk

What used to be a closet with double doors, has now been turned into part closet office, by removing the door and inserting shelving at the right height. By painting the inside of the closet in the same color as the doors, you get a cohesive look in the space.
