21 Kitchens without upper cabinets for a minimal and light look

post

Ditching wall cabinets and going for kitchens without upper cabinets has a minimal and modern effect on a kitchen interior and allows you to work with open shelving in your kitchen remodel to finish off your kitchen walls.

Since you lose the storage space that would otherwise be provided by the wall cabinets a kitchen without upper cabinets is typically easier to achieve in a kitchen space with a bigger floor plan, as you can work with ample lower cabinets to provide you with enough storage opportunity.

In the list below, you can find a selection of my favorite kitchens without upper cabinets in different layouts, floor plans, settings, and color palettes for you to get inspired.

A spacious kitchen without upper cabinets to accentuate room height

In a spacious kitchen with high ceilings, it makes sense to ditch the upper cabinets if you can find a place to store your pots, appliances, and other kitchen items. A low layout will make the space appear even higher and the combination of the three pendant lights in varying height above the dining table accentuate the tall room even more.

A wide kitchen layout without upper cabinets

The absence of upper cabinets in this beautiful natural wood kitchen makes the space feel larger and the combination with the aesthetically pleasing dining area in different wood tones works well in this kitchen design where the materials themselves are the focal point. The range hood and the beautiful piece of art are the only elements on the wall in this kitchen living space.

A corner kitchen layout with storage space in the bottom kitchen cabinets

This kitchen is planned out in a corner layout with a kitchen island in the middle of the space. The different lower kitchen modules are great to maximize storage space so that the wall space can be kept minimal, with the exception of the white range hood and two elegant wall lamps.

A wall shelf instead of upper kitchen cabinets in between two windows

This beautiful corner kitchen layout has two windows that add a lot of natural light, which makes adding upper cabinets rather challenging. Instead, lower cabinetry is paired with wall shelves that can hold serving dishes, dinner plates, and serving bowls mixed with a beautiful selection of wall art on the top shelf.

An awkward floor plan with a blue kitchen without wall cabinets

The blue kitchen cabinets have been adjusted to this rather awkward floor plan, which would look much too heavy with upper cabinets. Open shelving is added to the niche spaces in the wall to store easily accessible kitchen items.

A kitchen island provides extra cabinets and drawers on the back

This spacious kitchen with light oak kitchen cabinets includes a large kitchen island with seating and a long module of lower drawers and cabinets. The white marble countertop and backsplash add an elegant touch to the one wall on the back where the black task lighting adds a wonderful contrast.

The absence of upper cabinets allows for extra wall space for a beautiful floating shelf

Rather than trying to fit wall units in the small wall space available above the sink, this beautiful kitchen has been fitted with a floating shelf that adds visual interest to the kitchen design. Since the sloped ceiling makes the room feel smaller, this is a great solution to create the illusion of more space.

Practical high cupboards on the side eliminate the need for upper cabinets

When you are worried the drawers and cabinets on the lower half of the layout won’t suffice to store all your plates, dishes, and appliances, a tall wall of cupboards like in the kitchen example below is great for functionality and it allows you to keep the rest of the kitchen free of wall cabinets.

Dark kitchens without upper cabinets look lighter and more balanced

A dark kitchen with upper cabinets can easily become too heavy visually, so leaving out the upper cabinets in this case will make your design appear lighter, especially when combined with white walls like in the example below.

A long kitchen module underneath a sloped roof

This space requires a bottom kitchen layout and the long module of drawers provides a place for each and every kitchen detail. By painting the wall in an eye-catching color, the space becomes interesting and the fact that there is less space available is not so apparent anymore.

The off-white shaker cabinets in this beautiful kitchen have been paired with tall cupboards on the side for extra storage, yet no upper cabinets have been added to keep the look light and airy. The tin floating shelf above the sink is great for displaying ceramics.

This galley kitchen layout provides lower cabinets on both sides, allowing for the upper area to be kept free of upper cabinets. This way, the accent pendant lights above the sink get all the attention they deserve.

A spacious kitchen with historic details and dark cabinets

Ditching wall cabinets in this historic kitchen was a great design choice, as the wall and ceiling features, dark cabinetry, and herringbone flooring get all the attention they deserve. The area above the sink is filled with a black marble backsplash, wainscoting, and black accent wall lamps.

A bamboo kitchen without upper cabinet space accentuates the high ceilings in this townhouse

This kitchen is located in a historic townhouse with high ceilings, which are accentuated even more because of the absence of wall cabinets. The wall above the counter is filled with an elegant wall lamp and an open shelf to display a selection of beautiful ceramics.

A small kitchen inside a niche space without upper cabinets

In this small niche kitchen, the combination of tall cupboards and lower cabinetry allows for a practical layout that is light and airy at the same time. The natural stone countertops stand out against the white cabinetry and they complement the beige limestone flooring beautifully.

Kitchens without upper cabinets work great in larger floor plans

In small spaces, you have to take every opportunity to provide storage, which often means a kitchen without upper cabinets is challenging. If you can work with a large floor plan, you might not need the extra space on the wall for upper cabinets, which will make your kitchen appear lighter. Especially in rooms with lower ceiling height, this can be such a great design decision.

A long peg rail rather than wall cupboards to complement the lower cabinets

This elegant kitchen without upper cabinets has been fitted from wall to wall with an impressive oak wood peg rail which provides a true focal point in this kitchen design. The white-soaped oak of the lower cabinets complements nicely with the warmer wood tone on the peg rail for a beautiful effect in this cozy kitchen design with a white marble countertop.

Open shelves make up for less storage in the kitchen

Open shelves are a great alternative for wall cabinets, however, if you are worried your kitchen items or appliances will gather dust, you can use the shelves for decor items only. Just like in the example below, open shelves are great for a fresh green plant as well.

An attic kitchen with open shelving in the same material as the backsplash

When your kitchen is fitted underneath a sloped roof, it’s often not a possibility to fit in wall cabinets. This kitchen design pairs white kitchen cabinets with beautiful grey marble countertops and a backsplash that also comes back in the material of the open shelves for an integrated effect.

A long brass rail replaces the upper cabinets in a yellow shaker kitchen

This beautiful yellow kitchen from deVol features a pretty brass rail where you can hang your most used items. Above the rail, three beautiful vintage pendants provide the area above the sink with light and I’m a big fan of the classic shaker cabinetry which usually looks rather heavy, yet without upper cabinets the kitchen still looks light and balanced.

Kitchens without upper cabinets allow for art and decor elements on the wall

This modern, minimal kitchen with dark wood cabinets and white terrazzo countertops has tall cupboards for storage, yet the absence of wall cabinets above the kitchen sink allows a beautiful artwork on eye level paired with a white wall lamp that complements the countertop and small backsplash.

Sand walls and a minimal decor in a historic Swedish flat

post

This gorgeous Swedish flat with sand walls (sold via Historiska Hem) has a clean and minimal decor that makes the historic details of the building stand out in an elegant way. The combined dining and living room is connected to the kitchen, which has simple white cabinets and a cute bench in front of the window that can be used as a breakfast nook.

The bedroom is my favorite space in the apartment, as the decor pairs perfectly with the greige walls, and the careful selection of accessories and textiles enhances the look of this space.

As a smart solution to work from home, a small walk-in closet is transformed into an office space with a floating desk paired with a few floating shelves for storage space.

The combined dining and living room has the most subtle greige paint color on the walls, which makes the white floorboards, crown molding underneath the ceiling, and the white doors stand out. The elegant light wood dining table pairs nicely with the off-white dining chairs and the next to the table finishes the look off perfectly.

The beige linen curtains add a warm tone to the setting and warm up the beautiful daylight coming through the big historic windows.

The subtle brown and warm grey tones in the sofa, marble coffee table, and textiles also come back in the colors of the art print. These brown elements add a lovely contrast to the otherwise minimal space.

The modest kitchen with white cabinets is continued all the way up to the ceiling, allowing for lots of storage space in the kitchen. The closed cabinets are mixed up by a tall open cupboard where a selection of pretty ceramics is displayed.

The bedroom walls are painted in a subtle beige paint color paired with a mixture of browns and beiges in the textiles, art prints, and accessories. The large windows let in an abundance of daylight, which is reflected into the space by the round mirror on the wall opposite the bed.

Villa Vipp Puglia: a Danisch design retreat in Italy

post

Danish design brand Vipp has opened the doors of a new countryside guesthouse in Ostuni, one of the most beautiful towns in Italy. The design of the guesthouse was realized in collaboration with the Dutch design studio Studiotoff who are specialized in adaptive reuse and renovation projects.

The whitewashed building so typical of Puglia’s scenic landscape holds a one-story family guesthouse that goes in line with the architectural style of the area. The edges of the 1.5 ha plot are lined with a low dry-stone wall which is a local tradition to define your piece of land. The villa itself stands in sharp contrast against the rugged natural scenery.

The living kitchen is characterized by the modern light grey kitchen with stainless steel countertops that contribute to a modern design aesthetic. The curated furniture selection harmonizes perfectly with a selection of rural countryside objects.

The concrete flooring and white walls set the stage for the grey Vipp kitchen and the grey sectional sofa, which seem to both blend in and stand out in this setting at the same time.

Cozy yet minimal bedrooms with a mixture of modern and rustic elements

Open-plan apartment in a turn-of-the-century building

post

This beautiful Swedish apartment (sold by Alvhem) has an open layout plan that connects the living room to the kitchen via the dining room. The view from one side of the apartment all the way to the other side is impressive, to say the least, and you can see that the opening towards the kitchen was made at a later point during renovations.

The dining room and living room are decorated with a mixture of beiges, different wood tones, and a variety of green plants that stand out against the white walls.

Both the master and guest bedroom have a wardrobe fitted above the doorway to optimally use the floor space for storage.

The grey and white pattern in the marble countertop brings out the off-white color of the shaker kitchen cabinets in a lovely way.

By opening up the wall between the kitchen and the dining room, the layout of the kitchen can be bigger and the owners planned a large kitchen island with a sink that connects the kitchen with the adjacent living space.

A Swedish apartment with a combination of different wallpaper designs

post

This gorgeous Swedish apartment (Styled by Livin Deco, photographed by Jonas Lundberg for Stadshem) features a combination of two different floral wallpaper patterns in the living and bedroom for a characterful effect that is romantic, however since the furniture selected is quite minimal, the interior has a modern appearance at the same time.

The wall between the kitchen and the living room is opened up for an unobstructed view and an open-plan layout. The sage green kitchen cabinets are paired up with an elegant wood dining table and chairs and the green of the kitchen cabinets complements the green tones in the living room.

The bedroom has a green botanical wallpaper pattern, which makes the old doorway that was turned into a bookshelf stand out in a powerful way.

The living room features a bold wallpaper pattern with red and green tones, which is a true focal point in the space. The white historic fireplace, beige sofa, and white area rug stand out against the darker tones in the wallpaper, and the white pendant light adds a statement piece to the setting.

The green tones in the wallpaper come back in the sage green kitchen cabinets of the kitchen, which are paired with a black countertop and a tile backsplash with an elaborate pattern.

The round wood dining table and chairs provide the kitchen with a spacious dining spot that pairs wonderfully with the soft beige wall color used on the kitchen walls.

The wall next to the dining table is finished with a simple wall shelf and an art print with green tones that pair nicely with the kitchen cabinets and the living room wallpaper.

The bedroom wallpaper has a beautiful leaf pattern that adds a lovely texture and makes the dark hardwood flooring and the white ceiling stand out. Since the wallpaper is such a focal point, the decor in the rest of the bedroom interior has been kept rather modest, with a combination of white and beige textiles on the bed.

Next to the bed, an old doorway has been transformed into a bookshelf with white shelving and a white background, which stands out against the green backdrop of the wallpaper design.

The open-plan living room features a mixture of beige and brown furniture and soft furnishings, which is a color combination that also comes back in the kitchen. The dark wood kitchen cabinets add a lot of contrast to the space, while the beige cupboards, white marble, and stainless steel add variety to the material mixture.

Since both rooms are adjacent, these wall colors can be observed together for a beautiful play between cool and warm.

Norwegian home with white walls and a dark wood kitchen

post

This gorgeous and minimal home (for sale at Eie, photographed by Dag Sandven belongs to Catrine Svellingen, located in Norway. The white walls come back throughout the apartment, where they are contrasted with a variety of brown and wood tones.

The kitchen is the central hub of the apartment, with the oval kitchen dining table standing in between the kitchen itself and the living room. The dark wood kitchen cabinets paired with the beige stone countertop add a beautiful dark tone to the apartment, which comes back in the sofa color as well.

The bedrooms have been decorated in a very minimal way, while the bathrooms in cement and marble have a modern, stylish appearance.

To give the kitchen layout a lighter appearance, the high cupboards containing the larger appliances are white, blending in with the kitchen walls so that they don’t take up a lot of space visually.

The modern hallway is defined by the combination of a concrete and hardwood floor, which meet in a curved line. The wall mirror is great for checking your outfit, yet it also reflects daylight into the low-lit hallway space.

Vintage finds in a Swedish flat with historic details

post

This beautiful home (styled by Emma Fisher and Annica Clarmell, photographed by Henrik Linden, for Alvhem) in Sweden has the most wonderful selection of both old and new furniture, which enhance the gorgeous turn-of-the-century details in the window frames, ceiling moldings, and door frames.

The spacious adjacent living room and dining room are decorated with a beautiful selection of old and new furniture pieces, with the blue-painted vintage cupboard on which the vinyl player sits being the bright focal point in the entire space.

The kitchen and master bedroom are decorated in a modest and natural color palette with a cozy and inviting look.

The color palette in the living room consists of a mix of beige and grey in the textiles and soft furnishings, which also comes back in the colors of the gallery wall above the sofa. The large beige area rug underneath the light grey sofa adds a lot of texture and the subtle light grey wall color makes the white crown molding underneath the ceiling stand out beautifully.

The dining and living room are connected to each other with beautiful historic double doors, from which you can take a peek into the other room. Because of this, it’s important that the color palettes of each of the rooms match each other.

The dark wood dining table rests on a natural rug and is paired up with a mixture of different dining chairs for a unique effect.

The colors of the dining room are in perfect harmony with the color palette applied to the living room interior.

A large mirror leaning against the dining room wall reflects the space and makes it appear even bigger. The wood tones of the piano and the bookshelf complement nicely with the rest of the dining room furniture.

The dark wood kitchen is a bit dated, however, by focusing on a beautiful design at the kitchen dining table, the space gets a modernized look.

The kid’s room is the most colorful room in the apartment, as it has eye-catching wallpaper with a bold palm pattern. Also here, you can find a vintage piece: the desk in front of the window matches the style of the rest of the apartment furniture and is perfect for homework.

Calm and elegant open-plan apartment

post

This beautiful turn-of-the-century apartment in Sweden (for sale via Alvhem) has a light color palette, enhanced with wood tones and a few blue accents paired with white walls throughout the interior to optimally reflect the daylight coming in through those large windows.

The living and dining rooms are included in one space, which is separated from the kitchen with an additional wall, allowing for a half-open layout where the kitchen is still in a separate area, yet easily accessible and part of the same space.

The bedroom includes an impressive wardrobe that goes wall-to-wall and a two-person workspace fills the area by the window.

The living and dining areas are connected to each other with a long section of Ikea Besta wall cabinets that spread over the entire back wall. The String shelf adds a spot for books and the light color palette is enhanced with natural beige tones and a combination of wood and hemp in the two rugs.

A living room with a brown sofa and a lovely combination of art prints

The brown sofa in the living room is paired with a modest gallery wall in brown and blue tones, which mimics the color palette in the textiles on the sofa.

A round mirror on the wall reflects the space and the daylight coming in through the dining room windows.

A white kitchen separated from the living room with a half wall

Rather than include the kitchen and living room in one space, a half-wall is built between the two sections to create a half-open layout.

The white kitchen cabinets are paired with simple stainless steel hardware and beautiful white marble tiles arranged into a subway pattern.

A niche space with a limewash accent wall

While you can opt to paint your interior wall in a beautiful limewash paint, in this case only the area inside of the niche space where there used to be a doorway is treated with limewash, for a beautiful grey accent in the space from which the round mirror stands out.

A bedroom with light grey walls and blue bedding

The light grey bedroom walls pair nicely with the white-washed hardwood flooring in the space and I love the way this wall color stands out against the white trim underneath the ceiling. The brown fabric headboard is paired up with a mixture of beige, white, and blue bedding. This combination of warm and cool tones adds an interesting contrast to the bed.

The bed fits perfectly between the wall and the wardrobe, still allowing for two bedside tables to be placed on either side of the bed.

A wall-to-wall built-in wardrobe in the same color as the wall

The elegant wardrobe is spread over the entire bedroom length, creating ample storage space for clothes in the bedroom. The upper cabinets that are reachable with a step ladder only can be used to store away items that are less used. The wardrobe doors are painted in the same color as the bedroom walls, for a tone-on-tone effect that is finished off with small stainless steel knobs.

A two-person workspace in front of the bedroom windows

When you both work from home, it’s often smart to include a double desk so you have a larger home office. The space in front of the window includes a large table top on Ikea trestle legs and two wood chairs. This white and wood combination also comes back in the String Pocket shelf on the wall where office accessories can be stored.
