The Wishbone Chair: 29 inspiring dining rooms with the iconic design chair

The iconic CH24 Wishbone Chair was designed by Hans Wegner in 1949. It was the first model Wegner designed exclusively for Carl Hansen & Son and it has been in continuous production ever since it was introduced in 1950.

The combination of the back-and armrest into a single piece lends the chair its organic functionalism. To stabilize the steam-bent top and ensure comfortable support, Hans Wegner added the characteristic Y-shaped back, hence its name Wishbone Chair (also referred to as CH24 chair or sometimes y-chair).

Over time, the Wishbone Chair has gained recognition as the ideal chair, capturing the essence of modern Danish design. Its many material variations have found their place in many dining rooms all over the world. I you are thinking about purchasing this timeless classic, I have listed my favorite dining room inspiration with the CH24 chair below.

The production process

The manufacturing of each Wishbone chair takes more than 100 steps, most of which are constructed by hand. The hand-woven paper cord seat alone takes a skilled craftsman at Carl Hansen & Son about an hour to create, using approximately 120 meters of paper cord.

This process ensures impressive durability, and stability that make the chair both strong and long-lasting. The built quality paired with its timeless design aesthetics and a distinctive, elegant form, more than allow the Wishbone Chair to stand the test of time.

Wegner’s iconic design comes in various solid wood variations, each accentuating and highlighting the tapered legs and curved back in their own distinct way.

The Wishbone Chair is available in different wood variations ranging from beech, ash, walnut, and oak, to a teak version recently re-released. You can even buy a seat cushion to add on top of the paper cord seat.

Next to the solid wood versions, Carl Hansen & Son releases the Wishbone Chair in a variety of limited edition colorways and a few lacquered staple colors in their collection.

Wood Wishbone Chairs are very popular and it’s the material version you see most in the inspiring home tours I feature here on the blog. The oak Wishbone Chair has a natural appearance that looks great in a Scandinavian interior and the oak wood has a very subtle contrast with the paper cord seat.

Beech wishbone chair

While the contrast between the oak wood wishbone chair and the paper cord seat is stronger, in the beech or ash wood chairs, the color palette is more uniform and subtle.

While an arrangement of Wishbone Chairs can be very impressive around a large dining table, they fit perfectly around a small dining space as well. The beech CH24 chairs are combined with the round dining table and the soft pink tone on the walls.

While the rest of the rooms in this apartment have white walls and a minimal interior, the dark green kids’ room with an integrated home office spot really stands out in this interior.

The white living room walls are paired up with white and neutral furniture pieces, which is a look that is continued in the connected dining area as well. While the bedroom shares the same white and natural color palette, in this space beige walls are added to the setting.

The dark green kids’ room walls contrast with the white and pink textiles in a very powerful way, which is a color combination that can be observed from the standing mirror in the living room as well.

Duplex loft with a beautiful rounded window

This beautiful duplex loft in Sweden has an impressive ceiling height, which is used for a second level that contains both a bedroom and a home office. The impressive steel staircase comes out in the living room, while the area underneath the loft level is used for the kitchen and a dining area with dark grey walls.

On the second level of this duplex loft, you can find a bedroom with dark teal walls and a walk-in closet with a small home office. The loft level is separated by a glass partition that allows the daylight to come through from the large window.

Even though the selection of the decor and wall color in the living room of this duplex loft is rather simple, the beautiful gallery wall reaching up toward the ceiling is what makes the space unique and personal.

On the other side of the rounded window, you can find a smaller gallery wall that follows the staircase. These art prints really accentuate how high these ceilings really are.

The section underneath the loft that holds the dining table is visually separated from the sofa area by a dark wall color. The second loft level can be reached when climbing up the steel staircase in the living room. The bedroom space is separated from the downstairs area by a black metal glass partition that still lets through the daylight coming from the rounded window in the living room. Curtains are added behind the glass wall for added privacy when needed.

The bedroom is painted in a deep and dark teal paint color, which puts all the attention on the white structural beams that can be observed on the ceiling. The white fabric bedframe stands out against this dark wall color, while the round mirror on the wall reflects the bedroom and makes it appear bigger.

The walk-in closet behind the bedroom also holds a small home office space made with a String furniture desk in walnut that is attached to the wall. For the closet space, the same paint color as the one used in the bedroom was picked out in a few shades lighter, which was a great choice for this tiny room that doesn’t get any direct daylight.

This beautiful studio apartment with grey walls is a perfect example of how mixing modern and antique furniture pieces can have such a unique and personal effect on an interior. Especially when you live on a smaller surface, it’s important to add character and to make your home look unique.

The modern furniture pieces in the sleeping and living area of this studio home are mixed with a beautiful antique dresser and a small antique desk. These antique pieces add a beautiful warm tone against the warm grey paint color on the walls and give the color palette a richer appearance, while the modern striped lounge chair adds a trendy element to the space.

The unique sky-blue kitchen cabinets in this spacious living kitchen are matched by the exact same color on the walls for a tone-on-tone look that modernizes this rather outdated kitchen in such a lovely way. The picture ledges on the wall behind the dining table are painted in the same mesmerizing color as well, tying together the look nicely.

This rather outdated kitchen was painted in a very light blue color, giving it a unique update and a modern touch against the backdrop of the tone-on-tone wall painted with the exact same color.

The cabinet fronts, as well as the sides, plinths and walls are all painted in the same sky-blue wall color, which makes the black countertop and the accessories on the wall stand out in a lovely way.

A mudroom bench is a nifty piece of furniture for your entryway where you can sit to put your shoes on, while it can also serve as a storage unit for shoes or other small items.

Having everything organized and within reach in your entryway can be a huge time-saver when getting out the door, so spending some time to design your entryway optimally will go a long way. You can also include a place to sit down when tying your shoes, which allows you to create a cozier atmosphere in your mudroom.

Below you can find the best mudroom bench inspiration for entryways in different shapes and sizes. Some require some serious DIY work, while others are easier to put together.

This perfect mudroom design idea is located in a beautiful Swedish house. The door of the house comes out into a small entryway that also includes the stairs and doors towards the other rooms, leaving limited space available for storing coats and shoes.

The combination of the built-in bench with the closed cabinet and the shelf with hooks for coats is painted white, matching the white backdrop of the shiplap walls in this entryway. The seat is finished off with a custom pillow in beige and brown tones, matching the overall style of the mudroom.

A free-standing mudroom bench with storage is placed against the wall next to the door of this Swedish house. The mudroom storage unit goes all the way up to the ceiling and includes a bench, shelves, hooks for coats, and shoe storage underneath the seat. Since this furniture piece is rather tall, there is enough space available to add a top shelf for baskets to store small things.

The storage baskets below the ceiling provide this all-white mudroom look with a welcoming natural touch that stands out against the white-painted wood.

A small mudroom integrated inside an entryway niche

Most of the benches with integrated storage have cubbies or symmetrical shoe storage underneath them. This entryway bench however has different sizes of shoe storage, making the look unique.

The mudroom bench is combined with a board with hooks that holds a woven basket. Both the board and the bench align with the niche space in this entryway, giving it a built-in appearance.

Note that the mudroom bench is lifted off the floor so it starts where the floorboards end. The custom shelves are painted in the same light grey color as the one used on the walls, which makes them stand out from the white floorboards, door frames, and white painted wood floor.

Hooks on a custom wall plank create compact entryway storage

This entryway storage is a bit atypical, as it includes a radiator instead of a mudroom bench. I still wanted to include this example in the list however because of the way the radiator integrates into the storage module allowing it to function as a little seat.

Since installing a regular coat rack so close to the door would be taking up too much space, a custom plank with hooks was made that narrows down towards the door. The top of the shelf can be used for easy-to-grab items, while the hooks can be used to store jackets and coats.

The wood plank is painted in the same color as the wall, allowing it to blend into the backdrop for a more subtle and minimal effect in the space.

A small mudroom built in a larger wardrobe module

When creating and installing the wardrobe mudroom module in this apartment, a niche space was left open to include a built-in bench for shoes underneath the closed cabinets.

The mudroom bench with integrated shoe storage includes a wall-to-wall plank with hooks for coats and a bench with cubbies. The bench doesn’t extend wall-to-wall inside the niche, leaving out a spot for an umbrella.

The top wood plank has hooks in the front and back, allowing for more hangers to find their place. While the cubbies underneath the bench are quite narrow, the area on top of the wood plank provides a spot for higher shoe models.

The built-in bench inside of this impressive closed storage module has overhead lighting and drawer modules that slide out from underneath for extra storage in this narrow room. Even though the bench and wardrobe take up quite a bit of floor space, by painting it white and adding a large mirror on the other wall, the room doesn’t feel too cramped either.

This is one of my favorite mudroom bench ideas on the list. The entryway bench with integrated storage is practical and functions as a small mudroom, yet it serves as a room divider at the same time separating the door to the apartment from the kitchen.

The mudroom bench is finished off with white shiplap on the side and back wall, adding a subtle farmhouse style to this element and complementing the decor of the sage green kitchen space behind it.

This mudroom bench offers a double seat with comfy pillows opposite a closed storage module. The bench includes closed storage as well, for a balanced look and elegant style in this spacious mudroom with stained glass windows.

The drawers and cabinet doors have black hardware that stands out against the white paint color on the cabinets and the light beige paint used on the walls. The burgundy velvet fabric on the pillows provides a real focal point in this long and narrow mudroom.

I think it’s such a great idea to optimize the space available in this small room by creating a little nook with the shoe bench and upper shelf wrapped into the corner.
