A green kitchen and two-tone walls in an open-plan apartment

post
A green kitchen with white metro tiles and a kitchen island in an interior with two-tone walls

The green cabinets in the open-plan kitchen really stand out in this beautiful Swedish home. The color contrasts with the light-soaped hardwood flooring, the white subway tiles, and the two-tone walls throughout the living kitchen.

Green cabinets and metro tiles in the kitchen

The green color used in the kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, and hallway is quite the bold statement in the otherwise neutral-colored interior. Green is a great color to add when you still want your home to look balanced and I think the effect has not been lost in this interior either.

The green of the kitchen cabinets pairs up nicely with the beautiful terrazzo stone countertop, the stainless steel cabinet handles and faucet, and the subtle white metro tiles on the wall.

The kitchen island is also a breakfast bar and has a spot for two bar stools and the part of the kitchen walls that have not been covered with tiles has been painted in two tones just like in the living room.

If you are looking for more green kitchen inspiration, have a look at my top picks of kitchens with sage green cabinets here.

Two-tone wall in the living room

The two-tone walls in the living room accentuate the beautiful wainscoting in the space. The wainscoting is covered with white paint, while the upper part of the two-tone wall has been painted in a warm gray paint color.

The warm wood color of the dining table and chairs in front of the window and the warm tones in the coffee table add a bit of warmth to the two colors on the walls and the white curtains frame the large window leading up to the balcony.

Painting walls is a great alternative to an accent wall and allows you to complement it with white paint to balance things out and create an effect that is subtle and balanced.

Green bedroom walls

The same green color as that of the kitchen comes back in the bedroom as well, where the walls have been painted entirely for a more dramatic effect. The green walls are complemented with elegant black wall lamps and contrasted by the light beige bed headboard and the white and beige bedding.

The wall-to-wall curtains consist of two layers just like in a hotel, which gives the bedroom a high-end look and feel. The wainscoting on the bedroom walls is painted in the same color for an integrated, classic effect.

Two-tone walls in the hallway and bathroom

The eye-catching green color comes back in the two-tone wall in the hallway, where the color also comes back in the built-in wardrobe that offers a lot of storage space.

In the bathroom, the same two-tone wall effect has been achieved with the green paint color on the upper part and on the ceiling and the bottom half of the wall has been tiled with simple white tiles just like in the kitchen. In every single room, this color is used, the color introduces an instant contrast in the space.

An industrial loft with a winter garden and a stainless steel kitchen

post
An industrial loft style apartment with black windows and a cozy living room with an eye-catching chandelier

This beautiful industrial loft has steel support beams throughout the interior, black metal pipes on the ceilings, and those wide loft windows which come out onto a winter garden that is as wide as the entire width of the apartment.

Even though the rough metal elements stand out in the space, the light oak flooring adds a soft and home-like coziness to the space that gives it the feeling of a residential home rather than an industrial building.

An industrial space with wall-to-wall black windows

Both the living room and kitchen are located in an open space that has been transformed into a cozy living area. The sofa area comes out onto a winter garden that includes a small lounge chair and a place to have dinner outside.

The living room itself has an eye-catching chandelier combined with neutral-tone soft furnishings and a blue TV sideboard, which stands out in a nice way.

A stainless steel kitchen in the middle of the space

Stainless steel kitchens are usually used in an industrial setting rather than in a residential one, yet this industrial loft-style apartment is a perfect match for this elegant yet rough kitchen.

The kitchen is built in the smallest space of the loft home and when you walk a bit further, you arrive at a lovely dining table. Even though the different functional areas are all connected to each other, I think it’s the light fixtures and the area rugs on each side of the narrow kitchen that separate the areas from each other.

A dark grey bedroom with industrial elements

The bedroom has the most beautiful dark grey wall color and has been decorated in a minimal way. The exposed metal pipes are painted black, which gives this room an industrial touch as well and I like the warm wood on the bedside table, which warms up the look of this space.

Vitra extends the Jean Prouvé Collection with a series of 4 new iconic colors

post

Rolf Fehlbaum, Chairman of Vitra once acquired a vintage Antony chair designed by Jean Prouvé in the 1980s, which marks the beginning of the most extensive collection of furniture and objects by the designer, all housed in the Vitra design museum.

Apart from the Jean Prouvé designs in the Vitra design museum, Vitra made an agreement with the Prouvé family to set up the Prouvé furniture production. The collaboration started in 2000 and took place in close conversation with Catherine Prouvé, Jean Prouvé’s youngest daughter.

Over the past 20 years, Prouvé’s designs have become true icons far extending the borders of France that are timeless and exist beyond trends.

The iconic Standard chair designed by Jean Prouvé and produced by Vitra, available in 4 new colors

Jean Prouvé designs and the importance of color

Jean Prouvé designs are recognizable for their attention to detail, joints, proportions, overall construction, and the processing and execution of the materials themselves with the color being the final touch to the design.

According to Jean Prouvé, only the parts of the furniture that are in danger of corroding should be painted, to allow the nature of the material to shine. That’s why he left wooden and aluminum elements used in furniture production in an untreated state whenever possible.

Jean Prouvé did develop a beautiful range of colors for his architecture because beyond the practical application of colors to protect from corrosion, he knew he could use colors to create a certain aura around his furniture designs.

Vitra is now expanding the original colors (deep black, Japanese red, and Blanc Colombe) with 4 new colors and an unpainted steel variant in which the Jean Prouvé designs can be produced.

Prouvé Bleu Marcoule

Marcoule bleu refers to an important client who ordered a great range of furniture from Ateliers Jean Prouvé and this blue used to be part of the corporate identity of Marcoule at the time. Below you can see the Fauteuil Direction Pivotant desk chair combined with the Compas direction desk both in Bleu Marcoule.

Prouvé Bleu Dynastie

Dynasty blue is inspired by the cobalt oxide in the blue and white porcelain from Ming dynasty times. In the picture below, you can see the Fauteuil de Salon in the new color Bleu Dynastie shot in Jean Prouvé’s personal home in Nancy with the iconic metal doors visible in the picture.

Prouvé Blé Vert

Blé vert (or green wheat) refers to the fresh color of young green wheat just before it turns yellow and is ready to be harvested. Below you can see the famous Standard chair in Blé Vert.

Prouvé Gris Vermeer

Vermeer grey refers to the famous Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer (Vermeer grey) who when taking a closer look at his paintings, used a lot of grey undertones from which Jean Prouvé took inspiration. Below you can see the Cité armchair in the new color Gris Vermeer shot in one of the prefabricated houses Prouvé designed.

Light grey walls and contrasting brown tones

post

I’m so in awe of the beautiful Scandinavian interior design in this turn-of-the-century apartment in Sweden. The walls in this place have been painted with a variety of gray paint, which is a bit warmer than in this all-white and grey apartment, where the paint has more green undertones, yet it reflects the natural light and highlights the white ceiling moldings in such a beautiful way.

Dining room with warm light gray paint on the walls

The warm gray paint color on the walls in the dining room brings out the white doors, windows, and moldings so much. The dark oak dining table and bench bring out the warm undertones in the warm gray paint color, while the white pendant lamp and the white boulclé dining chairs lighten up the palette for a contrasting effect so typical in Scandinavian design interiors.

A dining room gallery wall finishes off this room perfectly.

A dining room with warm light grey walls, a dark oak dining table with white bouclé dining chairs and a white statement pendant light

Scandinavian interior design in the living room

The living room has been painted in the same warm light gray paint colors as the dining room, yet rather than a modern feeling, it has more of a typical Scandinavian interior design with lots of texture in the soft furnishings. I think the texture in the white fluffy area rug matches especially well with the light gray paint on the walls and it helps to reflect the natural light in the space.

The dark gray sofa with lots of throw pillows adds a bit of depth, which is enhanced by the contrasting Ferm Living Arum floor lamp (€ 532*) and the statement black plant pot by the window.

The two vintage cognac leather armchairs add a lot of warmth to the space and bring out the warm undertones in the light grey walls.

A living room with light grey walls, a white fluffy area rug, a dark grey sofa and cognac leather armchairs
A living room with light grey walls, a white fluffy area rug, a dark grey sofa and cognac leather armchairs

A classic gray bedroom with an oak wardrobe

For the bedroom, it seems like a light grey paint color was used which is a bit cooler. These cool undertones contrast very nicely with the custom-built oak wardrobe that covers the entire length of the room.

The classic gray of the paint makes the crown moldings on the ceilings stand out in a very nice way and I love the contrasting wall art above the bed. The bed has been made with a combination of white and beige linen which is matched with the beige vase and table lamp on each of the bedside tables.

The bedroom even has a spot for a small home office, a light grey armchair, and a warm gray sheepskin. The natural light coming in from those big windows is reflected in this big round mirror on the wall which is a little trick that you see coming back so often in Scandinavian interior design styles.

Which light gray paint colors to give a try with a Scandinavian interior design

In the dining room and living room of this Scandinavian interior, gray paint color is used with warm undertones, yet they are very subtle like for example in the Ammonite* gray paint color from Farrow and Ball.

In the bedroom, on the other hand, we can see cooler grey walls, which go more in the direction of the Blackened* paint color from Farrow and Ball.

Independent of which wall color you pick out for your walls, you should always buy a tester and try the color out in the room itself, as natural light and the materials in the space can highly influence the undertones of the paint.

White shaker kitchen cabinets with herringbone tile

post
A white shaker kitchen with stainless steel cabinet handles, light grey walls and a vintage oval dining table

The white shaker kitchen cabinets are such a perfect choice in this gorgeous turn-of-the-century apartment in Sweden. The white shaker cabinets lighten up the warm hardwood flooring and the light grey wall color and subway tiles in a herringbone pattern create a lovely backsplash in this L-shaped kitchen layout.

If you are looking for more white shaker kitchen designs, have a look at this blog post where I listed 25 of my favorite kitchen designs with white cabinets.

A white shaker kitchen with stainless steel cabinet handles, light grey walls and a vintage oval dining table

White shaker cabinets with stainless steel details

The simple yet elegant design of the kitchen cabinets works perfectly with the historical elements in the room, like the door moldings and the crown moldings on the ceiling. The surroundings are always something to take inspiration from when planning a kitchen remodel and this was certainly taken into consideration for this kitchen design as well.

The white shaker cabinets pair up nicely with the white countertops and the stainless steel faucet and cabinet handles add a modern touch to the otherwise classy shaker look that is so apparent in the cabinet lines.

The herringbone pattern of the hardwood flooring (not sure which wood species this is) comes back into the pattern of the tile backsplash on the wall and I like the way the grey wall paint is framed by both the crown molding on the top and the tiles on the bottom.

The upper kitchen cabinets have a white trim on top, while the bottom shaker cabinets have a plinth that shares the same shape, connecting the two kitchen cabinets visually.

Mostly base cabinets for a balanced layout

While some upper shaker cabinets have been added to the layout of this kitchen, the base cabinets hold most of the functionality. The module with the fridge is fitted by the door, a great spot where a larger module like this one doesn’t take away any light.

Above the sink, a window has been fitted which looks out into another room, which is a nice touch and it probably gives the room behind it a little bit more daylight. Since this kitchen is quite big, there is ample space for a large dining table in the middle, which has been placed on top of an area rug.

Greige walls in an apartment with an eclectic touch

post
A greige living room with a velvet beige sofa and Ikea Ivar cabinets painted grey

I’ve only recently written about this beautiful apartment with greige (a.k.a gray beige) paint colors and now I bumped into another inspiring interior with the best greige paint colors on the walls. This time the interior is a bit more eclectic, which makes it even more characterful and cozy.

The apartment gets a lot of natural light through those beautiful windows, which makes it an ideal setting for a darker greige paint color. I love the way this greige accentuates the white crown moldings on the ceiling, which is such a nice feature to accentuate in the space.

Greige living room walls combined with beige velvet sofas

I love the way the greige paint color scheme is combined with both beige and gray elements in the furniture and soft furnishings. The series of Ikea Ivar cabinets by the wall behind the sofa has received a lick of gray paint, which makes them stand out in front of the greige walls which brings out the cool undertones in the gray.

The brown fabric of the velvet sofa goes towards the warmer end of the spectrum and adds just a hint of warmth to the space which is enhanced by the warm wood tones of the coffee table.

The black table lamp and ceiling lamp, the black horse art print, and the other black accessories add a beautiful contrast to the wall color and I love that the old doorway next to the fireplace has been turned into a bookshelf. By painting this shelf black as well even more contrast has been added to the greige paint colors.

A warm gray kitchen

The wall color of the kitchen has been kept white, which makes the warm gray kitchen cabinets stand out in a lovely way. The white marble countertops and the stainless steel details combine so nicely with the gray cabinets and I think the layout of the kitchen works well.

Just like in the living room, the lighter shades of the kitchen have been combined with contrasting dark wood and black tints. The big round wooden dining table fits perfectly in the large space and the black dining chairs and the black vitrine add a wonderful touch of contrast to the gray paint on the cabinets.

Greige walls with black accents in the bedroom

The bedroom has been painted in a lighter shade of greige, which works well with the white-painted hardwood flooring. The wardrobe is hidden behind a beige linen curtain and the Ikea Ivar cabinets are painted in the same greige as the wall.

The wall behind the bed is finished with wainscoting that gives the impression of a beautiful classic headboard.

Christmas table setting with Arket

post

Christmas is getting closer and since I will be hosting one Christmas lunch here at my apartment, I decided to try out the holiday table decor and check out how I will be arranging everything. I’m really not a fan of an elaborate Christmas dinner table, yet I do love to add some Christmas touches to the table and its surroundings.

My go-to shop for Christmas decorations is Arket, they have the most subtle and beautiful decor for the modern home and holiday season and I decided to set the Christmas table with a selection of their amazing products kindly gifted to me to try out.

A subtle Christmas table setting

For my Christmas table, I didn’t want to overload things too much, so I worked with beautiful cabbage plates from Bordallo Pinheiro (€17 for the big plate*, €13 for the small plate*) which come in both a white and a green version. When it comes to holiday table decorating I love tints of green, for Christmas, so these plates are perfect. I love the combination of the white and green in the dinner plates and dessert plates, I think it adds a playful touch to the holiday table that puts the entire dining room in a festive mood.

I paired up the plates with the Ripple glasses from Ferm Living, and a white linen tablecloth from H&M home (€49,99 in a variety of colors*) which I have since forever, such great value for the price. To add some more texture to the textiles, I also added a table runner in grey, this one is from Himla. The bistro cutlery (€39 for a set of 4*) from Sabre Paris makes this table setting a bit more informal, which I like very much.

Christmas table decorations

To decorate the table, I spread out some paper decorations on a branch and in a bowl on the table, such an easy way to add an instant Christmas touch to your dining room table. The ones you see in the pictures are from Arket, but they are from previous years.

Every holiday season they bring out new color variations and you can usually buy 4 for 3* during the last months of the year. Their color palettes, though different every season, are always timeless, so I end up reusing them every year both for the Christmas table and to add some elegant Christmas touches throughout my interior.

The stars of the dining table to me are these organic candle holders made out of solid recycled brass with a silver coat on top (€59 per piece*). I love the way the organic silver shapes stand out against the other materials on the table and add a festive and glamorous touch.

A holiday table and its surroundings

Apart from the Christmas table setting, my dining room got a Christmas upgrade as well. I have used three paper stars to make the holiday table a bit more magical. The Snöblomma star from Watt & Veke (€ 65 a piece*) is fitted with a light bulb that is programmed to go on when it starts to get dark.

I have used a Wiz smart light for this, have a look at this blogpost if you want to know more about these programmable light bulbs. I have hung this one up in the window so it’s festive from inside and for the neighbors as well.

On the wall above the Christmas table, you can see the Leah paper star from Watt & Veke (€69 a piece*) which is a bit more graphic so I have used it without a lamp. On the wall above the cupboard, I have used an Afroart paper star combined with the Baies candle with a carousel* on top which turns around with the heat of the candle and spreads the most magical scent in the dining room.

The Drip candle Holders (€ 59 for the small version*, €99 for the medium version*) designed by Pascal Smelik for Pols Potten and the table lamp on my sideboard cast a lovely cozy light on the Christmas table setting, which what I think it’s all about when decorating for Christmas. I can’t wait to have people over and show them my subtle yet cozy and inviting Christmas table with a modern touch.

Other Christmas table settings to get inspired by

Looking for more Christmas table-setting ideas? I myself am a fan of a lighter color palette when it comes to Christmas table settings, but I find this darker mood so inspiring as well. Note that they used an oversized version of the Drip candle holders here, which is so impressive in this table setting.

Have a look here for a simple and minimal table setting with brass candlesticks and ornaments and branches as napkin rings. Lastly, while I wouldn’t have Christmas eve dinner exactly this messy, this Christmas tablescape has an impressive branch with gold ornaments that really attract the eye.

11 of the best metal candle holders

post

A candle holder is one of those objects that are easy to integrate into your home decor, yet it has such a cozy effect in a space. Combine them on the dining table with flowers and other decorations, or use them for a cozy touch on the window sill.

I compiled a list of my favorite metal candle holders below. The list includes some that I own myself or other designs that have long been on my wishlist. I find candle holders in metal such a great choice as they tend to reflect the light coming from the candles and they are timeless and can be used on any occasion. Have a look at this list of candle wall sconces for the modern interior if you are looking to hang your candles on the wall in a stylish way.

I usually find metal candle holders, whether brass, or silver painted, look best with white candles, or any natural colors like beige or grey so that the scented or unscented candles themselves don’t take away too much attention from the intricate shapes and the beautifully shaped metal. Below you can find my selection of the best candle holders made out of metal.

An organic silver-plated solid brass candle holder from Arket

These beautiful cloud-shaped candle holders (€ 59 a piece*) are made out of solid recycled brass with a silver coat and I love them combined in a set. The candles seem to sprout out of the organic shape.

Glow tealight holder designed by Amanda Lilholt for Applicata

Glow tealight holder designed by Amanda Lilholt for Applicata

The Glow tealight holder (€99,99*) from Applicata is available in brown or gold brass and can be combined with the other candle holder designs from the Circle series. The light of the votive candle reflects on the brass circle and adds a beautiful glow to the space.

Molekyl designed by Michael Rem for Gejst

Molekyl candle holder designed by Michael Rem for Gejst

The Molekyl candle holder designed by Michael Tem for Gejst (€ 54*) consists of a central metal pillar that holds the candle and is magnetic. The many small steel balls are naturally attracted to the center in any way you like. You can add different Molekyls together as well and create a candle holder with multiple candles. The Molekyl exists both for tapered or votive candles.

Balance candle holder from Ferm Living

Balance candle holder from Ferm Living

The geometrical shapes of the Balance candle holder (€ 29*$49*) by Ferm Living are both sculptural and functional and the metal candle base combined with the arch and the counter-weighted ball can be carried around.

Duca candle holder designed by Kroyer Saetter Lassen for Menu

Duca candle holder designed by Kroyer Saetter Lassen for Menu

The Duca metal candle stick holders (€59*$68.95*) designed by Kroyer Saetter Lassen for Menu can be extended (Duca is Latin for ‘extend’) by loosening the screw so the height of the candle holder can be adjusted as the candle burns. It’s a modern version of the antique adjustable candle holder you can find in old homes.

HAY Arcs candle holder

The Arcs collection is designed by the Belgian duo Muller Van Severen for HAY and just like the rest of the pieces in the collection, the candle holder is created out of a unified chain of vertical arcs that create a scalloped silhouette. The design is available in a variety of different finishes and sizes for regular candles (from € 32*from $50.70*).

Drip designed by Pascal Smelik for Pols Potten

The Drip candle Holder (€ 59 for the small version*, €99 for the medium version*) designed by Pascal Smelik for Pols Potten is inspired by the designers’ fascination with deformity. I think the shape becomes even more beautiful over time when the candle wax starts to drip over the candle holder.

Kubus micro by Bylassen

I think we all know the iconic Kubus candle holder designed by Mogens Lassen in 1962. The Kubus micro is a micro version of this design for a small candle, with the exact same mathematical geometry as the original Kubus candle holder.

The different Kubus micros are a perfect table setting decoration when combined together and are available in black, silver, and gold (from € 48*from $55.80*). I can imagine these combined on a beautiful wedding table where the candles add a cozy light to the venue. That is if you’re looking for minimal and modern wedding decor of course.

The Kubus candle holder is also available in a slightly bigger size for either tapered or tealight candles.

Iittala Nappula candle holder designed by Matti Klenell

Iittala Nappula candle holder designed by Matti Klenell

Nappula is the Finnish word for button and describes the soft, round forms that can be found in the candle holder (from €33*from $36.45*), an influence of Matti Klenell’s fascination for vintage and contemporary details. The design comes in a variety of colors and materials and looks great on its own in a special place or combined together for multiple candles.

Ildhane candle holder designed by Anderssen & Voll for Nedre Foss

Ildhane candle holder designed by Anderssen & Voll for Nedre Foss

The Ildhane cast iron candle holder (€79*$80.15*) is designed by Anderssen & Voll for Nedre Foss and has an expressive form that reminds of a bird with a beautiful tale. The design is not only perfect for holding your candles, but it also adds a sculptural element to any home or interior setting.

Skultuna Lily candlestick designed by Ivar Ålenius Björk

Skultuna Lily candlestick designed by Ivar Ålenius Björk

The lily candlestick (€98$99.40*) is one of these classic designs that you can see in so many Scandinavian homes. The Swedish sculptor Ivar Ålenius Björk designed this iconic piece for the world fair in New York in 1939. I love the way the design surrounds the candles.

The simple form resembles the arched shape of lilies petals and is made out of polished brass. This is one of those designs that has been on my wishlist for my home as well and I would love to add it to my collection.

A window between the kitchen and dining room

post
In this beautiful home, a historic 16-panel window was fitted in between the kitchen and the dining room to open up the existing layout.

This beautiful Swedish apartment has quite a few characterful elements to it that I really like, yet the historic 16-panel window that has been built into the wall shared by the kitchen and dining room is the one that really stands out to me.

A black kitchen with white metro tiles

The kitchen is a play of contrasts, with the black kitchen cabinets combined with the white metro tiles that are spread over the entire kitchen walls, from floor to ceiling. The white marble countertops give the black cabinets an elegant and nuanced touch and allow for some natural lines to be paired up with the straight lines of the tiles.

In between two large storage units, a small breakfast nook finds its place with a bench against the wall to save space. While this spot is great for having coffee or breakfast, a bigger dining table can be found on the other side of the beautiful historic window between the kitchen and dining room.

A white dining room with a window to the kitchen

The white-soaped hardwood flooring, the light plastered walls, and the antique storage units that frame the window shape the perfect setting for this minimal dining room. While this room doesn’t have much contrast, apart from the black woodburning stove, you can see the black kitchen peeking through the window, which makes the two rooms balance each other out.

Minimal white Bedroom

The bedroom has been decorated in a very minimal way, with the large photograph of the Flatiron building and the large plant next to the window being the only points of contrast here.

The wardrobe has been hidden behind a ceiling high curtain, which is an elegant solution to divide the space.

Oak kitchen cabinets with limestone countertops

post
A beautiful kitchen with oak kitchen cabinets combined with limestone countertops in a layout with a kitchen island.

The kitchen in this beautiful Swedish living space is the heart of the interior. Rather than blending in, as a white kitchen would do against these white walls, the oak kitchen cabinets combined with the limestone countertops make the kitchen stand out in a lovely, yet natural way.

Oak kitchen cabinets and a limestone countertop

The oak wood of the kitchen cabinets goes very nicely with the hardwood flooring and adds so much warmth to the otherwise white and minimal space. This warm palette is enhanced by the limestone used for the kitchen countertops. The two materials combine wonderfully and the natural textures in both the oak and in the natural stone add so much texture to the space.

The layout of the kitchen consists of the main block against the wall, which also includes high cabinets and a kitchen island that includes the induction stove and a small extra sink. No wall cabinets are added in this layout so it looks lighter. The walls are kept white, and the white ceiling, wall, and pendant lighting add functional lighting everywhere you might need it, without adding too much distraction from the natural oak and limestone materials.

A round kitchen dining table completes the look

The kitchen is built inside the living space, where a dining table is placed on the other side of the kitchen island. An area rug is used to visually separate the dining area from the kitchen and a slightly darker wood tone is picked out for the dining chairs, which matches the natural color variations in the limestone countertops and the oak in the kitchen.
