Greige walls, a white kitchen, and black accents

post

This beautiful turn-of-the-century apartment (for sale via Stadshem) has gorgeous white-soaped hardwood flooring, a white ceiling trim, and beautiful greige wall colors in the living room and bedroom.

A greige wall color is a gray-beige, or better said a warm, gray paint color with warm undertones. Greige paint colors come in a variety of shades and the amount of natural light the room gets will highly influence the red or yellow undertones in the paint.

Greige, or warm gray walls in the living and dining room

The living and dining room in this turn-of-the-century Swedish home has a beautiful greige wall color on the walls, which brings out the white trim on the ceiling, windows, and door frames in such a nice way. The white-soaped hardwood flooring has a very light color which complements nicely with the greige paint on the walls.

A white linen sofa (it’s an Ikea sofa with a Bemz custom cover in white linen*) in the living room lightens up the color palette and the warm tones in the linen throw pillows bring out the warm undertones in the greige wall color. The vintage cabinet by the wall is an ideal spot to store the firewood next to the fireplace and the black accents in the masks and the floor vases add a bit of character.

The dining table has these beautiful black accent chairs as well, which look very fresh in combination with the white linen tablecloth* and the green plants.

A white kitchen with wood countertops

The walls of the kitchen have been painted off-white, which matches nicely with the simple white kitchen cabinets and the warm wood tones on the countertops. The round kitchen dining table has the same chairs as in the main dining room, yet in wood tones that match the kitchen countertop.

The same greige paint color on the bedroom walls

The same greige wall color as in the living room has been used in the bedroom as well, where the gray-beige walls have been paired up with white fabric lampshades on the bedside tables and a paper shade pendant in the middle of the room.

The mixture of gray and beige textiles on the bed brings out the warm undertones in the paint color and just like in the living room, you can find some black accents in the form of the bedside tables to add some contrast.

The best greige paint colors to try to achieve this look

If you are looking to achieve this look on your walls, you could give a warm and mute gray like Charleston Gray from Farrow & Ball* a try, which has brown undertones that create a warm atmosphere. Note though that you should always try out a sample of the color in the room you are planning to paint so you can get an idea of the effect of the material and the natural light in the space on the undertones of the paint.

Small studio apartment with beige tints

post

I love inspiring studio spaces, as they prove that you don’t need a lot of floor space to be able to live in a well-designed space. This living space in a Swedish apartment shares a bedroom and a sofa area and a small storage solution that makes use of the vertical space available in this home.

A small studio apartment decorated in a beige pallette and black accents

An inspiring one-bedroom apartment with a beige color palette

The walls in this studio apartment have been kept white, which reflects the daylight coming in through those windows and makes the space appear bigger. The beige color palette adds an elegant touch to this small space and the palette comes back in the sleeping space as well as in the living area.

The beige sofa has been decorated with a beautiful mixture of throw pillows with black accents and the beige coffee table combination works very nicely on top of the beige textured area rug.

The beige palette with the black accent comes back in the sleeping area of this studio apartment, which has been placed in front of those big windows. The large mirror opposed to the bedroom reflects both the space and the natural light, which makes the studio apartment seem bigger.

Optimal usage of wall space as a space-saving solution

Storage space is one of the most important elements in one-bedroom apartments or studio apartments and I think in this home, the owners have found an elegant solution that doesn’t take up much of the limited space available.

A series of low Ikea Besta cabinets have been mounted right underneath the ceiling, leaving the area underneath it open, yet still offering valuable storage space. Underneath the cabinets, an elegant wall shelf has been placed to display decor pieces and books, while other things can be stored away in the closed storage unit.

Grey walls and solid wood kitchen cabinets

post

I love the mid-grey wall color in the living and dining rooms of this beautiful Swedish apartment. The grey walls have warm undertones, which complement the warm wood of the herringbone hardwood flooring. The white trimming on the ceiling, the beautiful rounded windows, and the white-painted iron radiators all stand out so nicely against the grey walls.

Grey walls in the living and dining rooms

The grey walls in this home aren’t quite as dark as the gray paint color that was chosen for this small apartment for example, but they are dark enough to add a bit of a dramatic effect to the daylight-flooded rooms.

The living room has been decorated with a grey textile sofa and light grey coffee tables with a blue vase that really stands out in the space. The adjacent dining room has been fitted with a black dining table and chairs, which add so much contrast here.

Just like the blue vase in the living room, the blue flowers add a colorful focal point that stands out so nicely against the perfect backdrop created by the grey walls. The dark blue art print on the wall matches this color scheme and I love the way those pops of blue brighten this otherwise neutral color scheme.

A kitchen with solid wood cabinets

The kitchen has been built in a relatively small space that has a curved wall that becomes more narrow towards the window. Because of this, the kitchen layout has been planned in one line against the wall.

The natural finish of the solid wood kitchen cabinets works wonderfully with the grey limestone countertops and complements the hardwood flooring perfectly. The different shades of wood in the cabinet doors, the flooring, and the dining chairs work in perfect cohesion together.

Since the kitchen has been built in a rather narrow space, the layout is concentrated on the bottom area, giving the kitchen cabinets a lighter look. In the upper area, solid wood open shelving has been installed which matches the kitchen cabinets.

While the grey walls in the living room are dark and have warm undertones, the wall color in the kitchen is lighter and has green undertones for a lighter and refreshing look that goes well with the solid wood cabinets.

A blue bedroom with a shiplap wall

post
a blue bedroom wall combined with a vintage desk, white and light grey bedding and a fresh green plant in the corner. A wardrobe is hidden behind the shiplap wall.

The bedroom in this turn-of-the-century home is quite large, yet has a bit of an awkward layout like it’s often the case in old buildings. The owners of this home separated the bedroom and created a separate area for the wardrobe, which has been hidden behind a shiplap wall.

A blue master bedroom with a home office

The bedroom has been painted in a deep blue color, which contrasts so nicely against the light-soaped hardwood flooring and the white trim on the ceiling and floor. Blue bedrooms are always so characterful and I think they work especially well when combined with green plants (as is the case in this bedroom as well) or with warm wood like that of the vintage desk by the window (a combination also seen in this beautiful bedroom).

The more narrow part of the layout by the window in this blue bedroom has been used for a small home office spot and I think it’s the perfect spot in this charming bedroom as it will get the most daylight.

The blue bedroom walls are combined with light grey textiles on the bed that have a cool undertone and the white nightstands and night lights really pop out from the blue walls. The big green plant in the corner adds a fresh touch to the paint color.

A shiplap wall to create hidden closet space

Behind the shiplap wall, a walk-in closet is hidden, which is quite an elegant solution in this space. The shiplap wall has been painted in the exact color of the wall so it doesn’t stand out too much. Note that the wooden panels don’t go all the way up to the ceiling for a lighter look and a view of the entire ceiling trim in the room, which is one of the beautiful historic features in this space.

Shiplap walls are great for adding texture to a space and are an easy DIY solution to cover a non-bearing wall like in this case. Have a look at this bedroom as well, where the shiplap wall covers a very small closet space.

Other blue bedroom ideas to take inspiration from

Blue is a great color for a master bedroom and it’s a paint color often seen in modern styles of interiors. Go for a darker and deeper blue wall color if you want a dramatic effect, like in this master bedroom. If you want a more subtle effect, lighter blue walls can be your cup of tea. If blue sounds a bit too daring for your bedroom, you can always go bold in the guestroom to give it a try.

Lastly, if you are planning to work with a custom wardrobe solution, it gives you the opportunity to work with the same color on the wooden panels of the wardrobe as on the walls for an elegant tone-on-tone effect, which has been achieved here in this beautiful bedroom. This is a similar effect as on the shiplap wall in this example yet the cabinets are painted rather than the wood panels of the shiplap wall.

A green kitchen and two-tone walls in an open-plan apartment

post
A green kitchen with white metro tiles and a kitchen island in an interior with two-tone walls

The green cabinets in the open-plan kitchen really stand out in this beautiful Swedish home. The color contrasts with the light-soaped hardwood flooring, the white subway tiles, and the two-tone walls throughout the living kitchen.

Green cabinets and metro tiles in the kitchen

The green color used in the kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, and hallway is quite the bold statement in the otherwise neutral-colored interior. Green is a great color to add when you still want your home to look balanced and I think the effect has not been lost in this interior either.

The green of the kitchen cabinets pairs up nicely with the beautiful terrazzo stone countertop, the stainless steel cabinet handles and faucet, and the subtle white metro tiles on the wall.

The kitchen island is also a breakfast bar and has a spot for two bar stools and the part of the kitchen walls that have not been covered with tiles has been painted in two tones just like in the living room.

If you are looking for more green kitchen inspiration, have a look at my top picks of kitchens with sage green cabinets here.

Two-tone wall in the living room

The two-tone walls in the living room accentuate the beautiful wainscoting in the space. The wainscoting is covered with white paint, while the upper part of the two-tone wall has been painted in a warm gray paint color.

The warm wood color of the dining table and chairs in front of the window and the warm tones in the coffee table add a bit of warmth to the two colors on the walls and the white curtains frame the large window leading up to the balcony.

Painting walls is a great alternative to an accent wall and allows you to complement it with white paint to balance things out and create an effect that is subtle and balanced.

Green bedroom walls

The same green color as that of the kitchen comes back in the bedroom as well, where the walls have been painted entirely for a more dramatic effect. The green walls are complemented with elegant black wall lamps and contrasted by the light beige bed headboard and the white and beige bedding.

The wall-to-wall curtains consist of two layers just like in a hotel, which gives the bedroom a high-end look and feel. The wainscoting on the bedroom walls is painted in the same color for an integrated, classic effect.

Two-tone walls in the hallway and bathroom

The eye-catching green color comes back in the two-tone wall in the hallway, where the color also comes back in the built-in wardrobe that offers a lot of storage space.

In the bathroom, the same two-tone wall effect has been achieved with the green paint color on the upper part and on the ceiling and the bottom half of the wall has been tiled with simple white tiles just like in the kitchen. In every single room, this color is used, the color introduces an instant contrast in the space.

An industrial loft with a winter garden and a stainless steel kitchen

post
An industrial loft style apartment with black windows and a cozy living room with an eye-catching chandelier

This beautiful industrial loft has steel support beams throughout the interior, black metal pipes on the ceilings, and those wide loft windows which come out onto a winter garden that is as wide as the entire width of the apartment.

Even though the rough metal elements stand out in the space, the light oak flooring adds a soft and home-like coziness to the space that gives it the feeling of a residential home rather than an industrial building.

An industrial space with wall-to-wall black windows

Both the living room and kitchen are located in an open space that has been transformed into a cozy living area. The sofa area comes out onto a winter garden that includes a small lounge chair and a place to have dinner outside.

The living room itself has an eye-catching chandelier combined with neutral-tone soft furnishings and a blue TV sideboard, which stands out in a nice way.

A stainless steel kitchen in the middle of the space

Stainless steel kitchens are usually used in an industrial setting rather than in a residential one, yet this industrial loft-style apartment is a perfect match for this elegant yet rough kitchen.

The kitchen is built in the smallest space of the loft home and when you walk a bit further, you arrive at a lovely dining table. Even though the different functional areas are all connected to each other, I think it’s the light fixtures and the area rugs on each side of the narrow kitchen that separate the areas from each other.

A dark grey bedroom with industrial elements

The bedroom has the most beautiful dark grey wall color and has been decorated in a minimal way. The exposed metal pipes are painted black, which gives this room an industrial touch as well and I like the warm wood on the bedside table, which warms up the look of this space.

Light grey walls and contrasting brown tones

post

I’m so in awe of the beautiful Scandinavian interior design in this turn-of-the-century apartment in Sweden. The walls in this place have been painted with a variety of gray paint, which is a bit warmer than in this all-white and grey apartment, where the paint has more green undertones, yet it reflects the natural light and highlights the white ceiling moldings in such a beautiful way.

Dining room with warm light gray paint on the walls

The warm gray paint color on the walls in the dining room brings out the white doors, windows, and moldings so much. The dark oak dining table and bench bring out the warm undertones in the warm gray paint color, while the white pendant lamp and the white boulclรฉ dining chairs lighten up the palette for a contrasting effect so typical in Scandinavian design interiors.

Scandinavian interior design in the living room

The living room has been painted in the same warm light gray paint colors as the dining room, yet rather than a modern feeling, it has more of a typical Scandinavian interior design with lots of texture in the soft furnishings. I think the texture in the white fluffy area rug matches especially well with the light gray paint on the walls and it helps to reflect the natural light in the space.

The dark gray sofa with lots of throw pillows adds a bit of depth, which is enhanced by the contrasting Ferm Living Arum floor lamp (โ‚ฌ 532*) and the statement black plant pot by the window.

The two vintage cognac leather armchairs add a lot of warmth to the space and bring out the warm undertones in the light grey walls.

A classic gray bedroom with an oak wardrobe

For the bedroom, it seems like a light grey paint color was used which is a bit cooler. These cool undertones contrast very nicely with the custom-built oak wardrobe that covers the entire length of the room.

The classic gray of the paint makes the crown moldings on the ceilings stand out in a very nice way and I love the contrasting wall art above the bed. The bed has been made with a combination of white and beige linen which is matched with the beige vase and table lamp on each of the bedside tables.

The bedroom even has a spot for a small home office, a light grey armchair, and a warm gray sheepskin. The natural light coming in from those big windows is reflected in this big round mirror on the wall which is a little trick that you see coming back so often in Scandinavian interior design styles.

Which light gray paint colors to give a try with a Scandinavian interior design

In the dining room and living room of this Scandinavian interior, gray paint color is used with warm undertones, yet they are very subtle like for example in the Ammonite* gray paint color from Farrow and Ball.

In the bedroom, on the other hand, we can see cooler grey walls, which go more in the direction of the Blackened* paint color from Farrow and Ball.

Independent of which wall color you pick out for your walls, you should always buy a tester and try the color out in the room itself, as natural light and the materials in the space can highly influence the undertones of the paint.

Greige walls in an apartment with an eclectic touch

post
A greige living room with a velvet beige sofa and Ikea Ivar cabinets painted grey

I’ve only recently written about this beautiful apartment with greige (a.k.a gray beige) paint colors and now I bumped into another inspiring interior with the best greige paint colors on the walls. This time the interior is a bit more eclectic, which makes it even more characterful and cozy.

The apartment gets a lot of natural light through those beautiful windows, which makes it an ideal setting for a darker greige paint color. I love the way this greige accentuates the white crown moldings on the ceiling, which is such a nice feature to accentuate in the space.

Greige living room walls combined with beige velvet sofas

I love the way the greige paint color scheme is combined with both beige and gray elements in the furniture and soft furnishings. The series of Ikea Ivar cabinets by the wall behind the sofa has received a lick of gray paint, which makes them stand out in front of the greige walls which brings out the cool undertones in the gray.

The brown fabric of the velvet sofa goes towards the warmer end of the spectrum and adds just a hint of warmth to the space which is enhanced by the warm wood tones of the coffee table.

The black table lamp and ceiling lamp, the black horse art print, and the other black accessories add a beautiful contrast to the wall color and I love that the old doorway next to the fireplace has been turned into a bookshelf. By painting this shelf black as well even more contrast has been added to the greige paint colors.

A warm gray kitchen

The wall color of the kitchen has been kept white, which makes the warm gray kitchen cabinets stand out in a lovely way. The white marble countertops and the stainless steel details combine so nicely with the gray cabinets and I think the layout of the kitchen works well.

Just like in the living room, the lighter shades of the kitchen have been combined with contrasting dark wood and black tints. The big round wooden dining table fits perfectly in the large space and the black dining chairs and the black vitrine add a wonderful touch of contrast to the gray paint on the cabinets.

Greige walls with black accents in the bedroom

The bedroom has been painted in a lighter shade of greige, which works well with the white-painted hardwood flooring. The wardrobe is hidden behind a beige linen curtain and the Ikea Ivar cabinets are painted in the same greige as the wall.

The wall behind the bed is finished with wainscoting that gives the impression of a beautiful classic headboard.

A window between the kitchen and dining room

post
In this beautiful home, a historic 16-panel window was fitted in between the kitchen and the dining room to open up the existing layout.

This beautiful Swedish apartment has quite a few characterful elements to it that I really like, yet the historic 16-panel window that has been built into the wall shared by the kitchen and dining room is the one that really stands out to me.

A black kitchen with white metro tiles

The kitchen is a play of contrasts, with the black kitchen cabinets combined with the white metro tiles that are spread over the entire kitchen walls, from floor to ceiling. The white marble countertops give the black cabinets an elegant and nuanced touch and allow for some natural lines to be paired up with the straight lines of the tiles.

In between two large storage units, a small breakfast nook finds its place with a bench against the wall to save space. While this spot is great for having coffee or breakfast, a bigger dining table can be found on the other side of the beautiful historic window between the kitchen and dining room.

A white dining room with a window to the kitchen

The white-soaped hardwood flooring, the light plastered walls, and the antique storage units that frame the window shape the perfect setting for this minimal dining room. While this room doesn’t have much contrast, apart from the black woodburning stove, you can see the black kitchen peeking through the window, which makes the two rooms balance each other out.

Minimal white Bedroom

The bedroom has been decorated in a very minimal way, with the large photograph of the Flatiron building and the large plant next to the window being the only points of contrast here.

The wardrobe has been hidden behind a ceiling high curtain, which is an elegant solution to divide the space.

Limewash walls in an open-plan penthouse kitchen

post
Limewash walls in an open-plan kitchen with white cabinets and marble countertops

Apart from the kitchen itself, the walls and ceilings of this penthouse living space are all treated with limewash paint, which gives so much more texture than regular paint because of the natural pigments of the crushed limestone the paint is made of. The textured walls contrast so nicely with the white tiles and cupboards in the kitchen and with the dark wooden flooring.

a warm grey lime wash paint to add texture

Not only the walls but the entire ceiling structure has been completely covered with lime wash paint. The effect of all these different angles and surfaces in the same texture is impressive and even though it accentuates the structure, it also evens out the many nooks and crannies in the roof and ceiling.

Limewash paints are great to apply to imperfect walls, as the added structure in the natural pigments is much more forgiving than regular paint. You can create different patterns depending on the painting technique you use and you can choose to paint the entire wall, or just a section of the wall for a more modest effect.

In this home, the limewash walls really stand out against the white window frames and the dark wooden flooring, while the natural materials in the dining area contribute to the rustic feeling the lime paint gives to the walls.

White marble in combination with limewash paint

What stands out to me the most in the kitchen is the white marble countertops, which also come back in the kitchen island next to it. To me, the contrast between the limewash paint and the natural color variations in the marble work in perfect balance together. The white marble adds a beautiful texture to the otherwise quite regular kitchen, while the limewash paint enhances the texture of the interior walls.

The white tiling on the kitchen wall goes all the way up to the ceiling, which frames the kitchen in a nice way. I think it accentuates the contrast between the materials and I like the sloped line where the limewash paint ceiling meets the tiled wall.
