13 kitchen cabinets crown molding ideas to finish your kitchen design

post

Crown molding adds texture and personality to any room, including the kitchen. This functional, decorative molding is typically designed to cover the gap between the walls and ceiling. It also lends a luxe aesthetic and makes any kitchen feel more sophisticated and upscale.

You can apply ceiling molding in between your kitchen cabinets and the ceiling, or you can add cabinet crown molding to finish off the top of the upper cabinets.

If you’re thinking about making changes to your cooking space, check out this list of kitchen cabinet crown molding ideas for inspiration. With the right type of crown molding, you’re sure to find a perfect match for your chosen interior design style.

Install Dentil Molding for Bold Texture

The dentil crown molding in this kitchen features blocks of wood that give it a dramatic texture. This unique type of molding was first used during the Greek and Roman empires when blocks were carved directly into exterior stone facades to create drama.

The dentil molding lends a beautiful and elegant touch to this modern grey shaker kitchen. The top of the upper cabinets is connected to the ceiling with the entricate molding. Its white color makes it stand out against the grey cabinets.

Traditional Crown Molding Brings Versatility

The classic crown molding in this kitchen is at the top of the ceiling to bring the eye upwards, making the room look and feel larger. Paired with a large window for natural light, it adds a beautiful touch to the very top of the walls.

Note how the molding here is installed far above the cabinets, highlighting the empty wall space between the cabinet and the ceiling for a visual effect that makes the space seem bigger. The molding is also installed as trim above the range hood which helps to carry the design throughout the entire kitchen.

The top edge of the kitchen is accentuated with cabinet crown molding, marking the end of the kitchen and the start of the rest of the tall wall space.

Get Bold with Intricate Designs

The white crown molding in this photo is highly decorative with intricate carvings to add a dramatic component. Note how the molding has a traditional motif, yet it’s installed in a contemporary kitchen to give it a unique contrast against the modern cabinets.

Its intricate detailing brings a sense of elegance to the space without detracting from the rest of the features in the room. Note how the molding follows the curve along one edge of the cabinet to create seamless symmetry.

Choose Crown Molding that Matches the Cabinet Color

The cabinet molding in this kitchen is understated and painted to match the color of the cabinets which extend to the ceiling. This design creates a cohesive look that plays well with the rest of the space including the floor and the wood shiplap trim on the wall boasting slim, vertical straight lines.

Painting your kitchen’s crown molding to match the cabinets is a smart way to create a colorful space instead of a more traditional white kitchen.

Crown Molding with Corbels Adds Dramatic Flair

This unique crown molding features decorative corbels and carvings in between each corbel. Originally, corbels were used to serve as brackets to support weight, but here, they’re used as decor.

The choice to keep the molding white allows it to keep the eyes focused on the green cabinetry and modern light fixture. While this molding is certainly bold and eye-catching, it also works well with a wide variety of styles to give the space an overall look of refinement and elegance.

Use Crown Molding to Highlight White Walls

This kitchen utilizes wainscotting along the wall to add texture. The added crown molding along the edge serves as a chair rail and brings it definition. Using this method not only accents otherwise bland white walls but also makes the kitchen look and feel cozy and inviting.

This kitchen is a good example of a way to use crown molding lower rather than high up against the edge of the ceiling.

Cove Molding Adds a Classic Component

Although this kitchen has a modern aesthetic, the cove crown molding brings it a touch of classic, timeless appeal. Cove crown molding has a concave, curved shape that works well when installed around corners.

Note how the molding closely matches the white cabinets but its brighter white matches the ceiling, creating a seamless look.

Step Crown Molding Creates Clean Lines

Step crown molding is a classic option that gives any kitchen a clean, modern look. This traditional molding works well when installed directly above floor-to-ceiling cabinets and brings some added depth and definition to the upper portion of the room.

The simple yet effective design of this molding “breaks up” the section where the top of the cabinets and ceiling meet to give the kitchen more dimension without being too overbearing.

Use Simple Molding for Smaller Kitchens

While extremely detailed crown molding gives most kitchens a touch of drama, smaller kitchens may feel too closed-in with this design. The sage green kitchen in this photo uses simple, understated molding that adds a small straight section of trim along the top edge of the cabinets.

The molding is painted in the same color to create a clean, cohesive look that won’t make the kitchen feel cramped. However, note there is a larger piece of curvy cove crown molding on the opposite wall that helps to highlight that side of the room.

Decorative, Colorful Crown Molding Adds Unique Detail

In this kitchen, the crown molding is accented with a raised vine-like relief that resembles a string of garland. This fun detail gives the kitchen a subtle pop of playful texture, while the entire wall and window trim are painted in the same color to contrast nicely against the teal-colored cabinets.

The combination of different colors, shapes, and styles brings this kitchen a fun, eclectic effect, while open shelving adds another space to display plates, collectibles, and more.

Use Different Crown Molding for Walls and Cabinets

The design of this kitchen uses two different types of crown molding to separate different sections subtly. In this spacious brown kitchen, a thin, flat section of smooth white crown molding installed along the walls and ceiling adds a subtle contrast against the light sand-colored walls.

A separate section of cabinet molding is installed along the edges of the upper cabinets in a matching color to create a sense of functionality that serves each respective element differently.

Botanical-Inspired Crown Molding Adds Historic Elements to a Shaker Kitchen

Although this kitchen has clean, modern lines and a contemporary feel, the decorative crown molding gives it a soft and subtle touch of classic flair. The unique relief along the molding boasts botanical details that add a bit of fresh, organic style.

Because this kitchen has high ceilings, the intricate crown molding is more of an added feature rather than a detraction from the sleek and modern decor of the rest of the space.

Add Cabinet Crown Molding to the Top of your Cabinets

The designer of this kitchen chose to install crown molding directly on top of the kitchen cabinets rather than along the entire length of the ceiling. Its subtle step shape slightly juts out from the edges of the upper cabinets to add a simple yet fantastic elemental component to the room.

If you look closely at the picture, you can also see simpler white crown molding along the edges of the wall that completes the look and covers the gap between the two components.

14 floor-to-ceiling kitchen cabinet ideas for an impressive effect

post

Storage space is a hot commodity in any kitchen, and installing floor-to-ceiling cabinets can do wonders for this important part of your home. Moreover, a kitchen that fills an entire wall has an impressive design effect on the room, especially if you are working with high ceilings.

Whether you’re pondering a full kitchen remodel or you’re looking for new ways to add more room for spices, pots, pans, and cooking tools, check out this list of the most inspiring floor-to-ceiling kitchen cabinet ideas to help you get started.

Use Glass Doors to Showcase Special Items

This kitchen features a pair of wall cabinets with glass doors on either side of the center cabinet area. While some of the upper cabinets have solid doors, the clear glass lets you showcase some of your most collectible items, your favorite set of China, or a collection of coffee mugs.

The intricate crown molding makes the transition from the grey cabinets to the ceiling so elegant. It also finishes the space and adds a historic touch. The gray backsplash created by the wall color matches perfectly with the cabinet color and creates a cohesive effect in the space.

Design a Synergistic Space

To create a cohesive aesthetic, choose cabinetry in the same color or finish throughout the entire kitchen. As you can see in this kitchen, the creamy white cabinets extend from the lower section up to the very top.

This design trick not only gives the kitchen a beautiful, coordinated look but also draws the eye up, creating the illusion of a larger space. Note how the cabinet that goes from floor to ceiling on the left can also serve as a roomy hidden pantry.

Use Open Cabinets to Break Up a Space

Your floor-to-ceiling cabinets don’t have to be in the same design across the entire wall. This kitchen features one large open wine cabinet next to the kitchen island, which helps to create a visual “break.”

Adding an open cabinet section or floating shelves creates a wonderful area to display your favorite cookbooks, a beautiful piece of serveware, or a few small sculptures that add a whimsical element to the kitchen.

Leave Part of the Wall Open and free of upper cabinets

The kitchen cabinets don’t necessarily need to take up the whole wall, even when it’s floor-to-ceiling cabinetry. Consider leaving a section of the wall open to highlight some fun architectural details. Add a mosaic tile backsplash or a rustic shiplap wall to give this part of the kitchen a pop of personality.

Not only will this give your kitchen a unique look, but it also ensures you have extra prep space. Note how this kitchen intentionally left the area above the sink and the cooktop devoid of any tall cabinets so there’s nothing but extra room to prep and cook.

Create Visual Contrast with Color

Using color is a perfect way to create a gorgeous contrast in this space. In the kitchen you see here, the white countertops extend across and toward the kitchen island, while the beautiful sage green cabinet color gives it a two-toned look.

You can also add contrast through small details like hardware, a farmhouse sink and light fixtures. For example, this kitchen uses shimmering brass hardware on the cabinets and the stainless steel appliances.

Note how part of the walls use the same material as the countertop for the backsplash, and the rest are painted in sage green to match the cabinets.

Eliminate Dead Space

This kitchen has plenty of large cabinets on the top and bottom throughout, ensuring that there is absolutely no wasted space. The corner by the wall can be used as a coffee station, while the center sink is perfect for doing dishes and food prep.

No square inch of this kitchen is wasted, which means there’s ample space to store and organize everything from plates and silverware to small appliances.

Keep Lighting in Focus

A large window in this open kitchen provides tons of natural light for cooking and eating. Not only does this make the kitchen look brighter, but it also keeps it from feeling too dark and dramatic. The integrated appliances also add a sophisticated element to this modern kitchen.

The refrigerator is neatly tucked behind the matching cabinet doors to lend the space a sleek and elevated look. Note how the dining area is part of the kitchen, and a ceiling pendant light helps to signify the difference between the two rooms, even without walls.

The upper cabinets are placed so high that a ladder can be used on top of the steel ladder rail that is applied in between both wall cabinet rows.

Make the Most of a Corner Area

The design of this contemporary corner kitchen highlights the large cabinets, but it also gives the corner area a completely different look. A window above the sink and a glass door leading to the outside bring in natural light.

At the opposite corner, open shelves provide a great space for display or open storage. This not only gives the kitchen an interesting look but also adds more functionality to smaller interiors.

High-End Materials Lend a Luxe Look

While floor-to-ceiling cabinets give you tons of storage, the finishes you choose tie it all together. Solid surface materials like granite or marble add an upscale element to any cooking space. Note how this kitchen features the same stone across the wall behind the sink to serve as a backsplash.

Solid wood cabinets and a high-quality floor will add inspiration to any kitchen, regardless of the size or layout. Focus on the materials when choosing counters, floors, and cabinets to ensure that you’ve created your dream kitchen.

Maximize as Much Storage as Possible

Although this looks like a small space, the floor-to-ceiling cabinet design to the left offers tons of extra storage. This extra-tall cabinet serves as a pantry while keeping important essentials close to the prep and cook area.

Even smaller kitchens can benefit when tall ceiling kitchen cabinets and roomy lower cabinets are installed. Use every available wall area to make sure that your kitchen is never devoid of storage space.

Designing Multi-Purpose Rooms with floor-to-ceiling cabinets

Since this home has an open floor plan, it’s important to integrate as much closed storage in the kitchen area as possible. Note how the kitchen has a wall oven instead of a larger separate oven that could interfere with available floor space.

Installing central tall units gives you a place for more than just kitchen items. They can also be used to hide extra throw pillows and blankets, books, and other things you might use in the rest of this studio apartment.

Keep it Neutral

Warm plywood makes this kitchen a cozy yet functional space. The tall floor-to-ceiling cabinet on one side gives the homeowner the added storage they need to avoid making the space feel cluttered. Using light or neutral colors and materials can make even the smallest kitchen look and feel larger overall.

Add Modern Elements

This small studio apartment features a blue shaker kitchen with floor-to-ceiling cabinets finished off with a trim below the ceiling. This provides the apartment with lots of storage space, while the blue adds a modern character to the design of the studio space.

Make Everything Work Together

This open, modern kitchen integrates every element so it works well for casual meals and entertaining. From the plethora of floor-to-ceiling cabinets to the white-painted hardwood floors, this kitchen gives you ample room to cook, chat, and enjoy meals all in one space.

By placing wall cabinets on top of one of the kitchen modules only, the space remains light and airy, even though it integrates so much storage space.

Use olive green to add depth to a minimal kitchen design

White kitchen cabinets are often preferred in a minimal and modern kitchen. If you are looking to add a bit more depth, olive green cabinets are a great option to fit within a minimal aesthetic.

15 contrasting kitchen island ideas to create a focal point

post

A contrasting kitchen island is the best way to make your kitchen design stand out. A kitchen island in a different color or material can create the focal point that takes your kitchen design from regular to stylish.

You can go for complementary colors to create a bold look, or work with a difference in materials to add texture and make your kitchen island stand out against the rest of your kitchen cabinets.

In the list below, you will find my favorite ideas for creating a kitchen design with a contrasting kitchen island. The inspirations range from bold color combinations to modest pairings of materials for a more subdued look.

Work with complementary colors to achieve a playful contemporary space

Let’s start with the boldest one of the contrasting kitchen island ideas on the list, shall we? The large kitchen island in the middle of the space is picked out in a beautiful pink color, that stands out against the sky-blue kitchen cabinets against the wall.

Not only are the colors of the cabinets different, but the countertops are also selected in different materials, setting the two modules apart even more.

The pink kitchen island has a wood countertop, while the light blue kitchen cabinets are finished with a white marble countertop. The gold hardware unites the two different kitchen modules.

The shiplap kitchen backsplash is painted in the same color as the kitchen cabinets, resulting in a tone-on-tone setting from which the contrasting kitchen island pops out even more.

The marble countertops in this kitchen with dark wood cabinets are also used on the backsplash and on the statement island which is the kitchen’s focal point. The marble back panel on the kitchen island makes it look like a solid block, which gives it an even more impressive presence in the space.

Imagine this gorgeous kitchen space with a blue island and it wouldn’t have such a unique appearance, wouldn’t it? The natural oak kitchen island is surrounded by blue-stained wood kitchen cabinets in this big space with an abundance of natural light.

The color palette is finished off with brass hardware on the blue kitchen cabinets and a white marble countertop that unites the kitchen island visually with the rest of the kitchen layout.

The dark wood kitchen cabinets in this modern space are paired with a wooden countertop for a dark and moody appearance that contrasts against the white oak wood flooring.

In front of the dark wood elements, a large island with quartz sides and a quartz countertop makes for an extraordinary eye-catcher. The stacked stone island has a clean and minimal look, that pairs well with the natural texture of the dark wood cabinetry and the herringbone flooring.

Create a beautiful contrast with your kitchen flooring

While the terrazzo kitchen island doesn’t stand out that much against the white cabinetry, it does pop out against the black and white checkerboard kitchen flooring. The tick, clean lines of the island pair well with the classic white cabinetry against the walls.

Inside the kitchen island, wood finish shelves allow more room for the storage of herbs and spices, making the kitchen island both functional and elegant.

Limestone kitchen floor tile ideas

Limestone tiles can add a natural effect to any kitchen setting, as this natural stone has a soft and organic expression. This natural aesthetic pairs well with both classic and modern kitchen designs.

In the below example, you can find a beautiful natural stone floor with different-sized tiles that add an organic look to a modern space with wood and stainless steel surfaces.

Glossy green porcelain tiles in a contemporary kitchen with classic elements

This is one of the boldest kitchen floor tile ideas on the list, as the dark green porcelain tiles are a true focal point in combination with the black Vipp kitchen. Dark tile color will typically work well in larger kitchen spaces with high ceilings. This is because the dark kitchen floor tiles will make the room appear smaller.

Black and white checkerboard kitchen floor tile ideas

Black and white checkerboard floor tiles are a classic choice. This option is often used as it’s a great feature to add dimension to a space as the contrast draws the eye to the kitchen flooring.

You can place your chequered tiles diagonally in the kitchen space like in the example below. In this case, the kitchen flooring will look more fun and playful.

Alternatively, you can have your kitchen floor tile positioned parallel to the direction of the floor plan. This will result in cleaner lines and a more classic look.

In the example below, you can see the black and white marble tiles adding texture to a classic kitchen design with dark green shaker cabinets and the walls and ceiling painted in the same color. The stone tiles have their specific texture, which adds another design element to the kitchen area.

It’s a great option for those of you who want to give the tile aesthetic a try before replacing your kitchen floors.

The elaborate veining and texture in these gorgeous grey marble floor tiles transform the interior design of this modern kitchen. The same marble is also used on the backsplash and the countertops for a cohesive effect in the space.

Since the marble is such a focal point, the rest of the kitchen design is more modest. The off-white kitchen cabinets and the light grey walls complement the floor tiles perfectly.

Wood-look kitchen floor tiles

With wood-look tile flooring, you can combine the best of both worlds. Wood-look tiles pair the enduring appeal of floor tiles with the warming textural effect of a hardwood floor. While wood floors are often used in a kitchen remodel, you must be somewhat careful with spills.

In this spacious farmhouse kitchen, the wood-look tiles and the beige limewash walls bring warmth to the neutral kitchen design. As opposed to the other kitchen floor tile ideas on the list, wood-look tile has a more subtle and quiet effect in your kitchen space.

Terracotta tiles for a traditional kitchen look

Terracotta tiles will add earthy and warm tones to your kitchen design. In the green kitchen example below, the matt and natural texture of the floor tiles are paired with dark green kitchen cabinets and glossy green tiles on the backsplash.

Encaustic tile in a laundry kitchen

Encaustic tiles are ceramic tiles produced with different clay colors to achieve the pattern. This prevents the design on the tile from fading, providing more durability and allowing the tile to last for decades.

The encaustic tiles in the small kitchen below add texture to the space that is decorated in a warm color palette. The other elements like the blue cabinets, red curtains, and gold hardware all complement the beautiful pattern on the floor tiles perfectly.

The right tile design can truly transform the look of a space. In this example, the flooring is the cherry on top of an already unique kitchen design.

Hexagon tiles add texture and separate functional areas

While most kitchen floor tile ideas on this list feature one kind of tile, you can also opt to pair different tile choices together. This will result in a playful kitchen design. When combining different tiles, the design possibilities are endless.

In this beautiful kitchen with white cabinets and a green tile backsplash, the cement tiles turn into hexagonal tiles around the kitchen island. The hexagonal tile accentuates the island and visually separates the cooking space from the rest of the living kitchen.

Hardwood flooring with a tile pattern painted on top

While these are not typically kitchen floor tile ideas as much as a kitchen floor hack, I thought it’s worth including painted wood flooring to the list. By painting a tile pattern on your old wood floors, you can create the impression of floor tiles, without having to invest. A win-win if you ask me.

Small kitchen storage ideas: top tips from the IKEA Planning Experts

post

I you have a small kitchen, you know how challenging it can be to find enough storage space for all of your kitchen essentials. However, with expert advice and a few smart small kitchen storage ideas, you can make the most of your limited space and create a kitchen that is both functional and organized, but most importantly, where you’ll love to cook.

Earlier this week I visited the IKEA “Planungsstudio”, (IKEA Plan and Order Point) here in Munich. This is a new IKEA concept in the middle of the city where you can get inspiration for your latest interior project and get help with the planning and ordering.

During my visit, I got inspired by one smart kitchen storage idea after the other, and after talking to the IKEA planning experts, I decided to write all the tips and tricks out in a little guide for you.

Image source: Inter IKEA Systems B.V.

In the article below, you’ll find a variety of storage ideas to optimize your small kitchen, ranging from planning out the right layout utilizing vertical storage space to maximizing cabinet and drawer storage and using smart solutions to free up valuable counter space.

About the IKEA Planungsstudio

I visited the IKEA Planungsstudio in Pasing Arcaden here in Munich, as it’s only a 10-minute metro ride from my home, yet you have multiple studios available in both Berlin and Munich.

The 300m2 location features a selection of kitchen and wardrobe inspirations that include smart solutions that are especially helpful for small-space living, a topic so relevant for anyone living in a bigger city. Samples of all cabinet fronts, hardware, and countertop materials can be tested out together so you can achieve the dream look for your new kitchen or wardrobe in person.

You can book an appointment with one of the IKEA professional planners or plan your smart interior solutions yourself on the spot. You can arrange a delivery to your home, to one of the new pick-up locations throughout Munich, or to an IKEA store of your choice.

First things first: declutter before you organize

Before we get into the tips and storage solutions, it’s crucial to mention the power of decluttering. Go through your pantry and kitchen items one by one and decide whether you want to keep, donate, or toss each item.

This can include expired food, duplicate utensils, or even appliances you rarely use. Each item you eliminate makes life easier and the task of organizing and planning a small kitchen less daunting.

Maximize your kitchen layout

When planning a small kitchen layout, it’s important to spend extra time and attention to the planning, as every placement of kitchen cabinets, drawers, and countertop space can have a big impact on the storage space available.

When you don’t have a lot of floor space to work with, you should focus on ways to optimize vertical storage. Keep in mind which functionality and storage opportunities your kitchen should include before planning out your kitchen, whether you do it together with an IKEA planning expert, or by yourself.

“At the IKEA Planungsstudios, we assist people with the planning and ordering of various solutions for their home like kitchens. Especially with the planning of a smaller kitchen, where every smartly placed cabinet or drawer module can mean instantly more storage space, it can be beneficial to sit together with one of our planning experts, who collectively can support you in no less than 13 languages.” – Michael Vortkamp, IKEA Market Manager Metropolregion München.

Layer drawers to unlock space and accessibility

Kitchen drawers are a great way to optimize space as they provide easy access by bringing the contents to you. With a simple pull, you can easily grab items. One of the key benefits of drawers is their ability to provide a clear view of their contents, ensuring that nothing gets lost or forgotten in the depths of a dark cabinet.

Drawers can be adapted to various needs and paired with thoughtful storage solutions to make even the coziest of kitchens work.

Add a drawer inside a drawer to utilize all available space

By planning out a drawer inside a drawer, you can utilize the top area you would otherwise lose and include items with less height like cutlery, spices, kitchen utensils, or even smaller appliances.

Image source: Inter IKEA Systems B.V.

Smartly divide your drawers and create a spot for everything

Dividers and inserts are an ingenious way to create a dedicated space for utensils, cutlery, and kitchen tools. This level of organization not only maximizes space but also streamlines your workflow, making meal preparation a seamless experience.

You can include an insert for knife storage to keep your knives safely next to each other or include a special insert for herbs and spices so they face you when you open the drawer.

Maximize your cabinet space

When planning a tiny kitchen, you should ensure making use of the available height in your space and add upper cabinets to create more storage opportunities. If you have extra high ceilings in your own kitchen space, you might even want to include cabinets reaching the ceiling. They will be harder to reach, however, they are perfect for storing less-used kitchen items.

Cabinets are essential for storage in any kitchen, but they become even more important in a small room. Use cabinet organizers such as adjustable dividers or pull-out drawers to maximize your space.

Utilize your cabinet doors

Cabinet doors are often less considered when planning a small kitchen, however, you shouldn’t overlook them as they can be used to add hooks or hanging racks to free up valuable cabinet space and to keep items easily accessible and within reach.

A smart IKEA UTRUSTA pull-out pantry will transform your cabinet with 6 main shelves inside the cabinet and 6 smaller shelves attached to the door. The shelving fits into each other when the door is closed and will move towards you when you open the door.

Image source: Inter IKEA Systems B.V.

You can also add hooks to make your cabinet doors do double duty, as in the creative example below.

Use tiered storage to make the most of your cabinets

Make use of vertical space by stacking items neatly. Tiered shelving or adjustable shelves within cabinets allow you to customize the layout and create more space to accommodate various-sized items, from plates and bowls to kitchen appliances.

Add cabinet inserts to create extra levels for glasses, storage containers, or other items with different heights, or work with a hanging basket on the bottom of the shelf to create easy access for items with less height.

In the example below, you can see the PÅLYCKE multifunctional cabinet insert used to hang wine glasses inside the kitchen cabinet.

Install pull-out storage in the smallest gaps

Even the smallest gaps in between kitchen modules can be optimized by including a narrow pull-out drawer which is perfect for a small pantry, for storing cutting boards, or for storage containers like in the example below.

Free up your countertop space

When it comes to small kitchen storage ideas, vertical space is your best friend. By utilizing wall space and open shelving, you can free up precious counter space and create a more organized and visually appealing kitchen design.

Make your open shelving work for you

Open shelving offers additional storage, easy access to your most used items, and at the same time provides you with a stylish way to display your kitchen essentials.

Keep your open shelves neat and tidy by arranging items by color or category. This not only looks visually appealing but makes it easier to find what you need.

Hanging rails for pots, pans, or utensils

Hanging rails can be great for hanging pots and pans so that they don’t need to take up any cabinet or drawer space. Spread the rail over your entire kitchen counter length or work with a smaller rail to store just a few pans and a few utensils.

Image source: Inter IKEA Systems B.V.

Add a wall-mounted spice rack

Save counter and cabinet space by storing spices on wall-mounted spice racks like the ones from the NEREBY series shown below. You can keep your most used spices close to where you need them and freshen up the look of your kitchen with a fresh green herb pot.

Image source: Inter IKEA Systems B.V.

Create extra countertop and storage space with a rolling cart

A rolling cart with shelves creates both extra storage and an extra countertop space and can be moved around to wherever you need it. It can serve as a small kitchen island in the middle of your kitchen, or a shelf when you place it against the wall.

Below you can see the KUNGSFORS rolling cart in stainless steel adding extra storage space, and the BEKVÄM design made out of Birch elongating the kitchen counter.

Accessories to optimize: it’s all in the details

While the biggest impact can be made with planning and organizing your tiny kitchen, during my visit to the IKEA Planungsstudio, I noticed how much attention the planning experts had dedicated to the details.

Every inspiring example kitchen on display included a plethora of kitchen accessories that are small kitchen storage ideas in and of themselves and great solutions for those who want to add clever storage solutions to an existing kitchen design.

Utilize Storage Containers as a focal point

Storage containers are an excellent way to keep your cabinets organized and make the most out of limited space. Consider using stackable containers to store food, dry goods, or snacks. Clear containers can help you see what’s inside at a glance, and labels can prevent confusion and make the organization even more accessible.

If you are storing your containers on an open shelving unit, they can even make a beautiful focal point in your kitchen.

Image source: Inter IKEA Systems B.V.

Compact and stackable kitchen essentials

There are some smart solutions for kitchen essentials that take up much less space than the original. A set of GARNITYREN nested bowls and containers will take up much less space in your cabinet or drawer and stackable cookware can free up a lot of space as well.

Multifunctional kitchen essentials

A foldable KLOCKREN strainer can be used both as a steamer and a strainer and it collapses so it takes up way less space in your cabinet or drawer.

A LILLHAVET over-the-sink cutting board will provide you with extra counter space while your sink is not in use.

Organize your waste and improve your recycling game

Recycling your waist is so important while cooking, however, it can take up so much space to do it well. The HÅLLBAR system makes it easier for you to recycle and it even looks organized in your kitchen.

The closed lid will reduce smells and the containers fit perfectly in different configurations inside of a cabinet, in a drawer underneath the sink, or stacked on top of each other.

Conclusion

Whether you pick out one small kitchen storage idea from this list or plan your entire kitchen from scratch, the tips and ideas to save space can work in kitchens small or big.

Before you start with the planning of your kitchen, it’s always good to de-clutter and make a mental list of all the storage functionalities you might need in your kitchen.

When you are planning the layout of a small or even tiny kitchen, make sure to work with the height available in the room and include cabinets or open shelving on top of the counters as well. Include a second layer of drawers inside your drawers to store more kitchen supplies and organize them with inserts and dividers to keep an overview.

Make use of tiered storage inside of your cabinets and use the cabinet door for a Lazy Susan pantry or for hooks to hang oven mitts or other pantry items.

Free up countertop space by hanging open shelving or rails on the walls which can be used for hanging your pots and pans, or for storing mason jars. You can even go for a rolling cart to create more counter and storage space that can be moved around in your kitchen.

Lastly, consider smart accessories that can be folded to store away or pick kitchen items that fulfill multiple functionalities.

19 Waterfall kitchen island ideas for a show-stopping effect

post

When you want to add a modern touch to your kitchen design, you probably came across the option of installing a waterfall kitchen island to transform and modernize your kitchen space. Where a traditional kitchen island pairs a countertop and base cabinets and separate sides, a waterfall design allows the countertop material to flow over the sides onto the flooring, creating a cohesive and contemporary expression.

A waterfall countertop makes your kitchen island a focal point in the room, which can redefine the design style of your kitchen. Moreover, the vertically extended countertop material can serve as a protective shield, preventing scuffs on cabinet edges in high-traffic areas around the island.

In the list below, you will find the most inspiring waterfall kitchen island ideas made out of different materials, ranging from natural stone to quartz countertops. Whether you go for a natural or engineered stone, you can pick out a tin countertop for a modest effect in the space, or go for a ticker slab to make your kitchen island look bold and impressive.

When you have such an impressive and expensive stone slab to work with, it’s almost a pity not to have it continue on the sides and integrate more material into a waterfall kitchen island.

The marble texture is a real show-stopper and transforms this minimal kitchen. The impressive marble waterfall countertops pair nicely with the combination of flat panel cabinets in light grey and a brown wood tone. The stone ties the design of the kitchen together.

Is a waterfall island expensive?

Since a waterfall kitchen island is typically constructed out of granite, quartz, or natural stone, they tend to be more expensive than the standard materials. Comparable to quartz, marble, or granite countertops, a granite, marble, or quartz waterfall island will be exponentially more expensive since you need more of those said materials.

Moreover, there is some skilled craftsmanship involved in ensuring the joints of the waterfall island fit together for a clean and elegant look, bringing the price up.

Luckily, a waterfall island is a timeless piece that can stand the test of time, making it worth the initial investment.

Should I add a waterfall countertop to my kitchen island design?

While a waterfall kitchen island can be a true show stopper in large kitchens, which the above examples undoubtedly have shown you, not every kitchen is a good fit. For this timeless design feature to work as a true focal point in this space, you need to make sure that you have enough space around the island.

A spacious, open-concept layout tends to complement the grandeur of a waterfall island, allowing it to become a captivating design element without overwhelming the space. Consider the existing architectural elements, such as the placement of doors, windows, and adjoining rooms, to ensure a harmonious integration.

Additionally, the style of your kitchen plays a crucial role; modern and contemporary designs often embrace the clean lines and sleek finishes of a waterfall countertop.
